OPINION: High Fees Mean Kalshi $5M Fine In Ohio Means Little
  • Kalshi received a $5 million fine from the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Casino Control Commission levied a $5 million fine on Kalshi for offering unlicensed sports betting in the state. However, with the recent production of Kalshi, this punishment will not be enough to scare them off.

During March Madness betting, Kalshi generated $25 million in four days with over $2 billion traded on the site. Now with NBA betting and the playoffs beginning with the hometown Cleveland Cavaliers in contention, one can assume they could pay this fine and easily make that money back shortly.

  • The Cavaliers are -8.5 on the spread vs the Toronto Raptors for Game 1.
  • Cleveland is heavily favored to win Game 1, with -370 odds.
  • The Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Playoff odds have them at -550 to win the series.

Kalshi brought in $263 million in fees during 2025 and sports accounted for about 90% of that. In other words, the Kalshi $5M fine in Ohio equates to a few days’ worth of action.

With the Cavaliers second on the odds board to win the East, one can expect their run to go on for a few weeks.

Still, the $5 million is real; however, the payment of that fine comes into question despite not worrying about the dollar amount.

Kalshi continues to explain that their legal sports betting status under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission is not regulated at the state level.

From their perspective, giving in to paying this fine could make other states with legal sports betting copycat the issue. Further, it would weaken their stance on whether Ohio prediction market apps are here to stay or have to keep fighting in court.

But do they have to pay it?

Realistically, they can try to fight the payment. Appealing it and letting it escalate to the courts is their likely response.

While the commission that represents Ohio sports betting could seek injunctions, it seems that Kalshi has the leverage at present.
