- New York legislators passed a bill to require sports betting sites in the state to send monthly invoices to players covering how much money they deposited, won, and lost.
- The bill is ready to be signed by Governor Hochul and will take effect January 1st, 2027 if approved.
NEW YORK – Legislators in the state of New York are making an effort to protect sports bettors in a way that no other state has done.
Senate Bill S9415, which is now Assembly Bill A10329, will require sports betting sites in New York to send invoices monthly to players, detailing how much money they deposited, bet, won, and lost each month. This would make New York the first state to require sports betting operators to directly report financials to players on a monthly basis.
The bill unanimously passed through both the Assembly and the Senate, sending it to Governor Hochul’s desk to be signed into law.
Details of the Bill
If signed into law (as it is expected to be), it will take effect on January 1st, 2027 and require legal sports betting sites to provide users with an invoice within 15 days of the end of each month.
Besides total amount deposited, wagered, won, and lost, the bill will also require sports betting operators to report:
- Amount of wagers
- Net gains / losses
- Promotions used by the player
- Amount of time the user spent logged in
- Users’ all-time betting history
Additionally, the bill gives the New York State Gaming Commission authority to establish the “formatting, clarity requirements, and any additional disclosures necessary to ensure such statements are readily understandable.”
Though the majority of this information is readily available, this could set a new precedent across the country. Requiring sports betting operators to send this information out monthly would help to keep players aware of their betting habits, potentially leading to a reduction in problem gambling.
Other states have put the wheels into motion for bills with similar requirements, such as New Jersey, which introduced Bill S4280 that contains similar language to that of A10329.
