How The Protect College Sports Act Impacts College Betting
  • The Senate Commerce Committee discussed the Protect College Sports Act, a bill that regulates NIL, transfer rules, and more disputes that impact college betting markets.
  • The bill doesn’t directly address controversial topics like collegiate player prop betting, but federal intervention puts a spotlight on amateur athlete protection.

WASHINGTON – The Protect College Sports Act hearing was held in the Senate Commerce Committee today, a bill that could fundamentally shift college sports. That also means a big change for one of the most popular forms of legal sports betting; college sports.

The Protect College Sports Act, introduced by Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz alongside other senators, aims to “protect the name, image, and likeness rights of, and provide protections for, student athletes and to promote fair competition among intercollegiate athletics, and for other purposes.” Senator Cruz wishes to create a rulebook for what he calls “legal chaos” in the current college sports climate.

Many prominent figures spoke in Wednesday’s hearing including Nick Saban, Pete Bevacqua, Pac-12 commissioner Teresa Gould, and more. Cruz was the most vocal speaker and explained how his legislation would resolve recent issues in college sports, such as NIL spending, eligibility disputes, conference realignment, and mid-season roster changes.

What Does The Protect College Sports Act Mean For Betting

Limitations to the transfer portal, NIL spending, and roster configurations can make seasons more predictable, impacting odds at college football betting sites. It would also prevent random in-season instances like UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka quitting on the team mid-season due to NIL disputes, which had an impact on futures bettors.

Looking forward, federal legislation addressing college sports puts markets like college player props under a microscope. Player prop bets for college basketball and other college sports have been restricted in many states and were a major topic of discussion in recent years with multiple scandals.

Since states have banned college player prop betting and now the Protect College Sports Act’s federal framework could accelerate the trend of college betting restrictions.
