Blue Jays, Orioles Fight For Final AL Wild Card Spot
  • The Blue Jays trail the final AL wild-card spot by three games and the Orioles trail by five.
  • BetOnline favors Detroit -126 over Washington and Minnesota -112 over San Francisco in Monday’s other two games.
  • Washington’s DJ Herz and Detroit’s River Ryan both make their first major league starts of 2026 Monday.
  • Tigers left fielder Riley Greene is hitting .361 over an 18-game stretch that includes five home runs.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles open a three-game series at Camden Yards Monday with both clubs still alive for the final American League wild-card spot. It is the highest-stakes game on a three-game MLB slate that also sends two pitchers to their first starts of the season in Detroit.

Wild-Card Math In Baltimore

Toronto (77-79) sits three games back of the final American League wild-card spot and Baltimore (75-81) sits five back, with the Yankees, Red Sox and White Sox currently holding the three berths. Trey Yesavage, 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA, starts the opener for Toronto opposite Baltimore right-hander Shane Baz, who is 6-15 with a 4.11 ERA.

Baz’s 1.35 WHIP this season is running a shade worse than the roughly 1.30 league average, a sign hitters are reaching base more consistently than his ERA suggests. Yesavage, making his first start since August knee surgery, carries a 1.14 WHIP through 18 starts, comfortably better than that league baseline. Toronto third baseman Kazuma Okamoto is the matchup to target against Baz’s number.

Okamoto is hitting .286 across his last 17 games, a stretch with five home runs in it, and he is averaging better than two total bases a night. Baseball Savant credits him with a 13.5% barrel rate this season, well above the 12% mark that separates good contact from great. Facing a Baz fastball that still averages 95.9 mph but has produced a mediocre WHIP all year, Okamoto’s total-bases prop at legal MLB betting sites is the individual-damage bet.

The run line itself, Baltimore -1.5 at plus money, is telling bettors not to expect a laugher.

Across the wider online sports betting market, betting odds treat all three games as competitive, with no team favored beyond -126 on the moneyline.

Two Arms Making Their First Starts

Detroit (73-83) hosts Washington (73-83) at Comerica Park with neither club playing for a playoff spot, which is why both teams are trusting the ball to pitchers making their first major league start of the season. Washington’s DJ Herz and Detroit’s River Ryan have combined for zero big-league innings in 2026 before Monday. Neither has a track record this season to price off, so the moneyline (Detroit -126) is really a bet on two unknowns.

The lineup matchup is not unknown. Over his last 18 games, Tigers left fielder Riley Greene owns a .361 average, a .410 on-base percentage and a .681 slugging percentage, has homered five times with 21 RBIs, and is averaging 2.7 total bases a game.

Baseball Savant’s expected numbers back it up rather than flag it as luck. His .374 expected weighted on-base average runs within a few points of his actual production, and his 15.1% barrel rate clears the elite threshold. Against a pitcher who has never faced major league hitters this year, Greene’s total-bases prop is the swing-driven angle on a night neither moneyline is easy to trust.

A Power Bat In A Pitchers’ Park

Minnesota (73-83) visits San Francisco (64-92) at Oracle Park, a venue Baseball Savant rates a 97 on its offense index, below the neutral 100 mark and one of the more pitcher-friendly parks in the sport. Twins right-hander Zebby Matthews (9-10, 4.74 ERA) has allowed 23 home runs in 125 1/3 innings, a rate that works against the park. San Francisco counters with right-hander Blade Tidwell.

Giants designated hitter Bryce Eldridge is the play against that homer-prone profile. Over his last 15 games he owns a .309 average and a .420 on-base percentage with 14 RBIs, averaging just under two total bases a night. Baseball Savant has him hitting the ball hard 52.2% of the time, well above the 45% mark that defines elite contact quality. In a park built to suppress offense, betting an individual hitter’s total-bases number over the team total is the more direct way to back the power.

The slate opens in Baltimore and Detroit within minutes of each other Monday evening and closes with the 9:45 p.m. EDT first pitch in San Francisco, and the Blue Jays and Orioles continue their series Tuesday and Wednesday at Camden Yards.
