Clemson +17 Best Bet: Swinney's First Double-Digit Home Dog
  • Clemson is +17 at -110 and +575 on the moneyline, with the spread posted at 16.5 and 17 across boards.
  • Swinney’s five earlier double-digit underdog games all came away from Death Valley, and Clemson lost every one of them.
  • Clemson’s defense has allowed 12.3 points a game since the LSU opener, and Miami won by only 13 at Wake Forest.
  • True freshman Tait Reynolds starts for an offense with two touchdown passes in four games, so the +575 moneyline is a sprinkle.

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson Tigers are double-digit home underdogs for the first time in Dabo Swinney’s 245 games as head coach, and at +17 they are the best bet against the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night. Kickoff at Memorial Stadium is 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with No. 4 Miami (AP Top 25) 4-0, the unranked Tigers 3-1, and both teams 2-0 in the ACC.

The Spread Has Never Been This Wide For Swinney

At 16.5 points, the number had no precedent in Swinney’s 245 games as head coach. The State newspaper in Columbia counted five earlier double-digit underdog games in his tenure, at Florida State in 2012 and 2014, against Georgia in Atlanta and at Texas in 2024, and at LSU this year. Clemson lost all five, and none was at Memorial Stadium.

Florida State’s visits in 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2003, with the Seminoles favored by 16 to 21 points, are the closest home comparisons. Clemson lost the first three by 19, 7 and 3 points and won the fourth 26-10, covering all four, though none of that came under Swinney.

On the legal college football betting board, Miami is -17 and the total is 48.

Miami moneyline-90090.0%

The half-point matters. A 17-point Miami win loses for Clemson +16.5 and pushes at +17, so the Tigers are worth the most at the highest posted number.

Clemson’s Defense Is The Case For The Points

Clemson’s defense has allowed 12.3 points a game since the 51-10 loss at LSU, Clemson’s athletics site reported, and it now faces Darian Mensah, the Duke transfer completing 88.7% of his passes with 14 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Miami’s margins this season were 70 against Florida A&M, 49 against Central Michigan, 39 at Stanford and 13 at Wake Forest, where it was a 20.5-point favorite. Clemson +17 needs Saturday to resemble that last game.

The 48-point total and 17-point spread leave Clemson about 15.5 points, which the Tigers topped in each of their three wins (22, 28 and 24) and missed only at LSU (10).

A True Freshman And The Top Run Defense Are The Risk

Reynolds makes his third career start after Swinney said Sept. 15 that the freshman had won the job from senior Christopher Vizzina. He threw for 108 yards with two turnovers in a 24-10 win at California, the Associated Press reported, and the offense is 120th in the FBS at 21.0 points a game, with two touchdown passes and four interceptions in four games.

Miami’s defense allows 9.0 points a game, fourth in the FBS, and has given up 158 rushing yards on 85 carries, or 1.9 a rush, and its 39.5 rushing yards a game is the fewest in the FBS. Running back Gideon Davidson ran for 159 yards against California, but Mensah’s offense averages 51.8 points, and a blowout is how this bet loses, as it did at LSU.

The Moneyline Is A Sprinkle

A $5 ticket to bet the moneyline on Clemson at +575 returns $28.75 in profit and breaks even if the Tigers win 14.8% of the time, a stake sized for an offense with two touchdown passes. A Clemson win cashes both tickets, but the spread also cashes on a loss by 16 or fewer, which makes the spread the play and the moneyline the long shot at legal sports betting sites.
