Texas vs Oklahoma Preview: Fade OU 1st Half, Take Texas ATS
  • Oklahoma to score less than 7.5 first-half points with -165 odds versus Texas is the best bet for the Red River Rivalry this weekend.
  • Texas to cover the spread against the Sooners is also a strong bet based on the Longhorns’ performance this season and in recent matchups versus their rivals.

DALLAS – The best bets for the Red River Rivalry matchup between Oklahoma and Texas this weekend are all bets against the Sooners’ offense. Specifically, bettors should be looking at the Oklahoma first half under and Texas to cover the spread.

Oklahoma First Half Under

Oklahoma’s offense has been terrible for over a month (three games). Over that span, which includes a matchup with the New Mexico Lobos from the Mountain West Conference, they have not scored more than 14 points:

  • Points vs Georgia (9/26): 13
  • Points vs New Mexico (9/19): 14
  • Points vs Michigan (9/12): 10

While those full-game trends point towards taking Oklahoma under 16.5 points with -145 odds, the better option is to take the Sooners under 7.5 first-half points with -165 odds at legal college football betting sites.

That’s because Oklahoma’s first-half offense has been particularly anemic.

In the first half of their past three games, Oklahoma has scored a combined seven points. That was against New Mexico.

Oklahoma has not scored a point in the first half this season in either of their matchups versus Power Four conference teams.

Additionally, Texas has allowed more than seven first-half points only once this season. That was against Ohio State. The Buckeyes rank 14th nationally in points per game, while Oklahoma ranks 110th.

The best bet of the game is likely on the strong Texas defense to hold Oklahoma to less than 7.5 first-half points with -165 odds.

Bet on Texas to Cover the Spread

Texas is undefeated this season. They are coming off an impressive road win at Tennessee two weeks ago. The Longhorns are the top-ranked team in the AP Poll and secured 61 of 70 first-place votes.

The reason why legal sports betting sites have made top-ranked Texas only a 7.5-point favorite over a 2-2 unranked Oklahoma is the rivalry game factor. Many people believe that rivalry games are inherently harder to bet because the added emotions in the games create variables that are hard to predict.

In many cases, that is true. In three of the past four years, that could not be farther from the truth.

Texas has beaten Oklahoma by at least 16 points in three of their past four matchups. In those Texas wins, Oklahoma failed to score even one touchdown or score more than six total points.

Bet on Texas to secure another large win on Saturday, with the Longhorns -7.5 (-110) an excellent option for bettors.
