New York Legislator Proposes Ban on In-Game Gambling Ads

NEW YORKNew York lawmakers are seeking to reform the mobile sports betting advertising landscape by banning ads during live sporting events.

Assemblyman Phil Steck proposed Bill A8925 with the hopes of restricting live sports betting advertising.

This comes after regulations established by the New York Gaming Commission to limit the visibility of gambling promotions on the air. Since legalization in 2022, the commission has established the legal frameworks to regulate online sports betting in New York.

Calls for regulatory action come as concerns for gambling addiction grow due to high visibility and more frequent operator exposure.

The assembly proposed a new bill in April in New York that could continue to crack down on mobile sports betting policies in the in the state.

The Gaming Committee and state legislators are seeking to protect minors and vulnerable populations by limiting exposure to gambling related content during peak viewership moments.

According to the American Gaming Association, TV advertising has fallen 11% since 2023. Nielson reports indicate that ad spending by legal sports betting sites peaked in 2022 and declined in 2023-2024.

If passed, Bill A.8925 would become effective immediately and prohibit advertising during live sporting events in New York State.
