Byrum Brown Faces Tennessee's 19-Sack Pass Rush
  • Tennessee is a 7-point home favorite at -285 on the moneyline, Auburn is +235, and the total is 54.
  • Brown’s passing and rushing props are not posted, but his anytime touchdown is available at -136.
  • Tennessee’s 19 sacks tie for the national lead, and the Volunteers have allowed one passing touchdown in four games.
  • Brown averages 224.0 passing yards and 59.3 rushing yards a game, the baselines for the props when they post.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Auburn Tigers quarterback Byrum Brown visits the No. 17 Tennessee Volunteers at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday at Neyland Stadium, facing a pass rush tied for the national lead with 19 sacks. Tennessee is a 7-point legal sports betting favorite.

Six Of Tennessee’s 19 Sacks Came Against Texas

Tennessee sacked Arch Manning six times in last Saturday’s 20-17 loss to the No. 1 Texas Longhorns, the only AP Top 25 team the Volunteers have faced. The loss dropped Tennessee from No. 14 to No. 17 in the AP Top 25. Texas still averaged 10.6 yards per pass attempt, so the rush got home without stopping the explosive play.

Over four games Tennessee has allowed 163.5 passing yards a game and 5.7 yards per attempt. Furman managed 43 passing yards, which flatters both numbers. Against the three FBS opponents the Volunteers have allowed 203.7 a game and about 6.6 per attempt. Brown averages 7.1 per attempt, a half-yard better than what FBS offenses have managed against Tennessee.

Brown’s Passing And Rushing Props Are Not Posted

Passing yards, passing touchdowns and rushing yards for Brown are not posted on college football betting boards. Only touchdown-scorer props are live, and Brown’s anytime touchdown is -136. That number needs him to score in about 58% of games to break even. He has run or caught for a touchdown in all four games this season, three rushing and one on a reverse-pass reception against Southern Miss. That is a sample of four, against Baylor, Southern Miss, Florida and Vanderbilt.

Numbers To Watch When The Props Post

Brown has 896 passing yards on 126 attempts, 224.0 a game, with six touchdown passes. That sits above the 203.7 passing yards Tennessee has allowed to FBS opponents. No opponent has thrown more than one touchdown pass in a game against the Volunteers, while Brown has thrown two against Southern Miss and three against Florida.

The rushing number is the one Tennessee’s pass rush can move. College box scores subtract sack yardage from a quarterback’s rushing total, Auburn has allowed 14 sacks in four games, and Tennessee averages 4.75 sacks a game. Brown has 237 rushing yards on 62 carries, 3.8 a carry, so his 59.3 average has more downside than the carry count suggests.

Five Interceptions, Three In The Opener

Brown has thrown five interceptions in four games, three of them against Baylor in the opener. He has two on 91 attempts since. Tennessee has three interceptions as a team, so its pressure shows up as lost yardage more than takeaways.

Both Teams Arrive 3-1

Auburn (3-1, 1-1 SEC) beat the Vanderbilt Commodores 21-15 last Saturday, with Brown going 18-of-27 for 140 yards, a touchdown and an interception, and scoring on a keeper. Tennessee (3-1, 0-1 SEC) is looking for its first conference win.
