The Titans are five point favorites at legal sports betting sites despite losing their first preseason game by over 20 points. Though Ward and the starters should get more run this game, here’s why bettors should be wary of Tennessee.
All Eyes On Cam Ward
This year’s number one overall pick Cam Ward will have his first primetime game of his NFL career on Thursday night and is sure to draw plenty of attention.
In his preseason debut, Ward completed five of eight passes for 67 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, but did look quite sharp.
Last year’s draft notably had three quarterbacks selected as the first three picks, Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye.
None of those three QBs threw a touchdown pass until Drake Maye did in Week 3 of the preseason, Maye being the only one to play Week 3 due to his impending status as a backup.
Williams and Daniels played the most snaps in Week 2 of the preseason, setting precedent for Ward as the impending starter. Expect to see a few more drives from Ward, but don’t assume that he will light up the scoreboard.
This Preseason
Both teams started their preseason 0-1, the Titans getting blown out 29-7 against Tampa Bay while the Falcons took a 17-10 loss against Detroit in a game which was cut short for an injury.
Ward was able to lead the Titans only scoring drive of the game in the second quarter, but Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle struggled to pick up the slack with the backups.
The Falcons did not play any of their starters in Week 1 but were able to put together a solid passing attack, with backups Easton Stick and Emory Jones going a combined 19/23 for 185 yards and a touchdown through three quarters.
Michael Penix Jr. has already been ruled out for Week 2, but it remains to be seen whether or not the rest of the starters will be active.
Tennessee’s defense should not give Atlanta much of a problem, allowing over 300 yards of total offense and 29 points in Week 1.
Despite Atlanta’s propensity to sit their starters in the preseason, the best bet at NFL betting sites is for the Falcons to cover the five point spread against a Titans team that has shown little promise.
