High April Hold Rate Leads To Massive Revenue For New York
  • New York sportsbooks recorded their sixth most revenue in April of 2026 since the legalization of sports betting in 2022 with over $240 million.
  • The handle for the month was about average at $2.17 billion, but had a high hold rate of 11.28%.

NEW YORK – April was a huge month for sports betting in New York, hauling in $244.1 million in revenue on a $2.17 billion handle.

Despite recording the third lowest handle of the first four months of the year and ranking outside the top ten in handle for a month since 2022, April of 2026 saw the sixth highest total revenue of any month since 2022, in large part due to a whopping 11.28% hold rate, the fourth highest in the history of legal sports betting in New York.

Knicks Continue To Be Major Sports Betting Draw

Though there are no official numbers published regarding which sports draw the most revenue and handle, it is easy to draw the connection from higher numbers to more sports being played.

The Yankees and Mets played a combined 51 games in the month, but more notably, the Knicks won their first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks 4-2, winning each of the last three games by double figures.

May of 2025 saw the eighth-highest total handle ever for FanDuel in New York, which coincided with the Knicks’ run to the Eastern Conference Finals, playing the entirety of their series against both the Celtics and Pacers during the month of May.

Part of the reason why the hold percentage may have been as high as it was for the month is because of tickets for the Knicks to win the Atlantic Division, which they would eventually lose to Boston in a tightly contested race.

Sportsbooks Reaping The Rewards

Multiple legal sports betting sites saw their best month ever in the state, including Fanatics Sportsbook and BetMGM, totaling $23.5 million and $15.8 million in revenue, respectively.

FanDuel crossed $100 million in revenue for the ninth time in New York, totaling $101.2 million on $771.6 million in handle with a 13.12% hold rate. It was the eighth-highest revenue generated in a month for the sportsbook despite the lowest handle of its top nine months.
