GREEN BAY, Wisc. – Josh Jacobs faces misdemeanor charges for battery and criminal damage to property after a May physical altercation with his girlfriend. He was arrested and released the next day, but now Brown County prosecutors formally charged Jacobs on Thursday.
The NFL’s personal conduct policy says a first-time violation for domestic violence carries a six-game suspension as the baseline. This suspension can increase due to certain aggravating factors like choking or using a weapon.
Surveillance video confirmed that Jacobs grabbed the woman involved, threw her to the ground and she hit her head. He then damaged her phone, resulting in misdemeanor charges for battery and criminal damage to property, which carries up to 18 months in prison if convicted.
The initial Josh Jacobs arrest in May originally booked him on five charges that included felony strangulation. While a six-game suspension is the starting point, there is a possibility for this situation to get much worse.
Looking back at the Ray Rice situation, he was initially suspended for two games before video of the incident was made public. The Ravens released Rice and he never played in the NFL again.
The NFL hasn’t released when they’ll implement their personal conduct review, but the case will certainly have legal sports betting implications for Packers’ futures and Week 1 lines.
