Vermont Legislature

  • Following Senate amendments, the House approved Vermont sports betting bill VT H 127.
  • With both chambers’ approval, the bill awaits a signature from Vermont Governor Phil Scott, who will likely sign the bill into law.
  • Following the governor’s expected signature, legal Vermont online sports betting will launch in January 2024.

MONTPELIER, Vt. – The House approved Vermont House Bill 127 on Tuesday after receiving amendments from the Senate.

Legal Vermont sports betting is a signature away from becoming official after VT H 127 successfully passed the House and the Senate.

This includes a provision that prohibits the use of sports wagering advertisements on products intended for people under the age of 21 and an advertising plan from operators to limit advertising towards underage bettors. The minimum age for legal sports betting in Vermont is 21.

Other prohibitions include betting on in-state college or university sporting events. Luckily for Vermont March Madness participants, the Department of Liquor and Lottery allows wagers on in-state schools participating in tournaments.

Governor Scott Expected to Sign

Because of Governor Phil Scott’s support for legal Vermont sports betting, he is expected to sign the bill into law.

In an interview with a local Vermont Channel 3 news station, Governor Scott told reporters that “It’s being done here in the state and we just need to find a path forward that we can provide for the protections necessary to make it viable for us and for Vermonters.”

The amendments provided by the Senate fulfill Governor Scott’s wishes by protecting underage bettors from unwanted advertising.

Vermont also joins Tennessee as the only states without brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, only legal online sports betting. Online sports betting in Vermont will launch in 2024.
