After over a year of delays, Maryland is prepping for the launch of its sports betting industry. The Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore expects to officially launch sports betting Friday.

  • MGM National Harbor will be the first Maryland sportsbook to launch, with a Thursday afternoon sportsbook opening.
  • The Horseshoe Casino in downtown Baltimore plans to begin accepting bets at their new sportsbook this week.
  • The launch will be preceded by a visit by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, who will test the sportsbook’s functionality prior to launch.

BALTIMORE – After a tumultuous road to legalization, Maryland may finally launch their legal sports betting industry as soon as the middle-to-end of the week.

The Horseshoe Casino in downtown Baltimore plans to begin accepting bets at their new sportsbooks this week. They are one of a number of sportsbooks in Maryland that are expecting a launch soon.

“If all goes well and the lottery approves, we’ll open to the public on Friday afternoon,” Randy Conroy, senior vice president and general manager of Horseshoe Casino told WBALTV. “I think our team is ready for this. We’ll expect to pass the final exam here with the lottery.” he continued.

Conroy is expecting the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency to visit the casino this week for a controlled demonstration of the casino’s sportsbook.

“They will place live bets at the windows or at the kiosks. We will show the lottery that we are adhering to all of the sports-betting regulations, standard operating procedures, etc.,” Conroy said.

Director of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, John Martin, says that casinos will need to demonstrate their compliance with regulations, provide fast and efficient service, keep an accurate bet ledger, and ensure that there are no technical bugs in the system in order to gain approval. If all goes well with the Lottery and Gaming Control Agency’s visit this week, Maryland will have a legal sports betting industry.

The first sportsbook to open in Maryland however will be the BetMGM sportsbook at MGM National Harbor. Prepped for a 12:30 p.m. Thursday launch, Maryland is ready to capitalize on taxable sports betting operations.
