LOS ANGELESMaverick Carter admitted to placing many bets on the NBA in the past during a 2021 interview led by federal law enforcement. He is not facing any criminal charges for betting on sports.

The longtime manager of Lebron James made it clear that he did not place any bets for other people, only wagered for himself, and stated that he did not recall placing any bets on the LA Lakers during Lebron James’ time in purple and gold.

Even though legal sports betting exists in 38 states plus Washington DC, local bookies have never been and are still not legally allowed to operate in the US.

Investigators were told by Carter and his attorney team that around 20 bets were placed over a year. He focused on NBA betting and betting on college football during that time. The record shows that each bet was in the ballpark of $5,000 to $10,000 per wager.

Feds conducted this one-time interview of Carter, according to a Washington Post report, in order to find more information on Wayne Nix, who pleaded guilty in April of 2022. It was noted that the feds were not seeking criminal charges against Carter but wanted to use him as a resource to learn more about the gambling ring that took his action.

This is because Carter did not act as a bookie himself and only used Nix to place his wagers. Section 18 of the US Code in Chapter 15. states that it is illegal to run, finance, or direct an unregulated gambling business. Maverick Carter did not of the above.

Wayne Nix did not just plead guilty to one account of conspiracy to operate a business of illegal gambling but also pleaded guilty to being a part of false tax returns. Along with Nix, an account that focused on the entertainment industry, William Fulton, pled guilty to lying to the feds. At first, he did not tell the truth about his role in laundering money from the gambling ring that Nix was running.

It is also important to note that the NBA does not have any rules against the managers of players betting on sports. In fact, the NBA is very involved in the world of sports betting, as the organization partnered with DraftKings in 2021.
