NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Saints are set to host the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football in a game that carries serious playoff implications.
Listing the Miami Dolphins as three-point road favorites, online sportsbooks and have set the Monday Night Football total at 37 points.
Miami Dolphins running back Myles Gaskin has -115 odds to record over 40.5 rushing yards, while the New Orleans Saints rank 1st in Rush DVOA this season.
While this number appears low, this couldn’t be a worse spot for rushing production for the Dolphins. The New Orleans Saints are devoid of any offensive firepower and are going to rely on their defense and home crowd to win this game.
Saints Defensive Unit
The Saints rank #1 in NFL Rush DVOA, and have continually bottled up opposing running backs all year. The Saints have only given up three touchdowns on the ground since Week 5 of the NFL season.
Miami’s path of least resistance is going to be through the air, which strengthens the chances of Gaskin finishing under his Monday Night Football player prop.
To make matters worse, Gaskin isn’t even expected to have total control of the Miami backfield on Monday Night. Duke Johnson is coming off a career game against the New York Jets and is expected to be heavily involved in the game plan again this week according to co-offensive coordinator Eric Studesville.
Studesville is expected to take a running by committee approach, and ride the “hot hand” against an already stout New Orleans rushing defense.
The Miami Dolphins enjoyed much success on the ground last week against the lowly New York Jets, but it will be a much different story this week against the New Orleans Saints.
With matchup and efficiency concerns for Gaskin this week, taking the under on 40.5 rushing yards seems quite viable.
