ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Tampa Bay is the AL East champion for a fifth time, and no Rays club has gotten there sooner, after Tuesday’s 6-1 nightcap win in the Bronx ended the race with the New York Yankees.
A Doubleheader Split By The Makeup Game
New York had held off the celebration in the afternoon, winning 2-0 on Cody Bellinger’s two-run homer in the fourth off Nick Martinez, in the rescheduled May 23 rainout that opened the twin bill.
Tampa Bay answered at night. Drew Rasmussen held New York hitless into the seventh and finished at one hit, 11 strikeouts and 6 2/3 innings of work. Yandy Diaz supplied the offense, four RBIs on two-run singles in the seventh and the ninth, the latter his 175th hit of the year, most in the AL. Closer Bryan Baker finished what Rasmussen started, retiring George Lombard Jr. to clinch the division.
Fifth Title, First Since 2021
The 2026 banner joins those of 2008, 2010, 2020 and 2021, and it came three days sooner on the calendar than the 2021 club’s, a franchise mark for an early clinch. The win also hands Tampa Bay the American League’s No. 1 seed and home field through the ALCS. The Rays’ AL East odds had already reached -2000 by Sunday and -2500 entering the series, a number that treated the race as settled before Tuesday made it official.
The Board Moves To The Pennant
With the division market retired, Tampa Bay’s ticket on the legal sports betting board now points to October’s rounds. The American League pennant board has the Rays as the shortest price in the field.

The clinch did not shorten the price. Tampa Bay was +280 entering the series and New York +330, so the board had already assumed the division and was pricing the pennant on October’s three short series, where seeding matters less than the starting pitching.
What the top seed does change is the path. Tampa Bay’s bye through the wild-card round means fewer must-win games between it and the pennant than any team behind it, which makes +290 the safer number of the three at legal MLB betting sites, not just the shortest one.
