SMU's Jennings, Louisville's Kienholz Fuel A 58.5 Total
  • Louisville is a 1.5-point home favorite over No. 16 SMU, with the total set at 58.5 points.
  • SMU’s Kevin Jennings owns 767 passing yards and eight touchdown passes against just two interceptions so far.
  • Louisville’s Lincoln Kienholz cleared 300 yards through the air in both of his first two starts as a Cardinal.
  • SMU has won four straight meetings with Louisville, including a 38-6 rout at home last season.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville welcomes No. 16 SMU on Saturday as a 1.5-point home favorite, with the total set at 58.5 points for two quarterbacks who have combined for 1,406 passing yards and 12 touchdowns through two games each.

A Short Number For A Shootout Environment

Louisville is -1.5 (-110) at legal college football betting sites, essentially a pick against a team ranked seven spots higher, at No. 16 to the Cardinals’ No. 23. The total has settled at 58.5 at both books, down from the 59.5-60 range BetOnline hung earlier in the week.

A spread that tight tells bettors neither book sees a talent gap large enough to separate two ranked teams in the Cardinals’ ACC opener, which shifts the real question to the total for anyone shopping this week’s legal sports betting slate.

Jennings Ranks Among The Nation’s Most Efficient Arms

Kevin Jennings threw for 430 yards and three touchdowns, with two interceptions, in a 27-24 win at Florida State to open the season, then went 14 of 16 for 337 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-10 rout of UC Davis.

The senior leads the ACC in passing yards and shares the conference’s high mark of eight touchdown passes with Miami’s Darian Mensah, completing 76.9% of his throws at 19.2 yards per completion, second nationally. That kind of per-throw explosiveness, not added volume, is what pushes a game total to 58.5 in the first place.

Kienholz Has Matched Him Start For Start

Lincoln Kienholz, a redshirt junior who transferred in from Ohio State without ever starting there, has answered every one of Jennings’ numbers so far.

He is 34 of 50 (68%) for 639 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions, adding 111 rushing yards and three more scores in a 41-38 loss to No. 9 Ole Miss (307 yards passing, 69 rushing) and a 59-13 rout of Villanova (332 yards passing).

Only five other FBS quarterbacks have opened this season by throwing for 300-plus in consecutive weeks, and no previous Louisville passer had done it in his first two appearances for the program. The Cardinals finally have an arm that can keep pace if Saturday turns into the track meet the total implies.

SMU Owns The Recent History

SMU has beaten Louisville four straight times, including a 38-6 win at Ford Stadium last season. Jennings personally has completed 49 of his 64 career throws against the Cardinals, a 76.6% clip that has produced 584 yards, six scores and zero interceptions, plus 115 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground.

That track record against this specific opponent, with the last two wins coming as ACC rivals, is the strongest case for taking the 1.5 points with SMU no matter how evenly the two passers’ season numbers read. Kickoff at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium is 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
