A Finale That Still Means Something

Penix, last season’s Atlanta starter before a torn ACL ended his year in Week 11, has been cleared for full practice work but is holding himself out of Friday’s game, wanting more ramp-up before he takes a hit that counts.
Strand Is the Wrinkle Nobody Drafted For
The name complicating Atlanta’s math is Jack Strand, an undrafted rookie out of Division II Minnesota State-Moorhead who took nearly all the first-team reps for a stretch of camp while Tagovailoa and Penix were both banged up. Thrown into relief duty against the Colts last week, Strand went 12 of 17 for 212 yards and a touchdown pass, then added a 16-yard rushing score in a 34-6 Falcons win.
That line came in relief work, and a Division II arm lighting up backup coverage is not the same evidence as a live read against a real front. But it is enough that Atlanta now has a third body worth watching Friday, not just two, and every rep Strand banks behind Tagovailoa this week trims the veteran’s margin to coast.
