- UCLA is a 2-point favorite over California at both Bovada and BetOnline, unchanged since Tuesday.
- Both teams debut new head coaches this week, Tosh Lupoi at California and Bob Chesney at UCLA.
- The total sits at 53.5 at Bovada and 53 at BetOnline, the two books a half-point apart.
- UCLA is -130 on the moneyline and California +110, after BetOnline nudged its price toward the Bruins on Tuesday.
BERKELEY, Calif. – UCLA opened as a 2-point favorite at California on Tuesday, and the spread in the UCLA Cal odds market has not budged through Thursday. That leaves bettors pricing two first-year coaching staffs with zero game tape on either side before Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. PT kickoff at California Memorial Stadium.
A Number That Hasn’t Moved
UCLA’s -2 spread has held at -110 at both Bovada and BetOnline since Tuesday, Sept. 1, the same day both books first posted the line. The moneyline moved once at BetOnline – UCLA from -125 to -130, California from +105 to +110 – while the spread itself has sat still.
A spread that holds while the moneyline creeps leaves the margin priced where it opened; the only thing that got more expensive is UCLA winning outright at all. Those five cents at BetOnline are the entire move this board has seen.
Two First-Time Coaches, Two Returning Arms
California promoted Tosh Lupoi as its 35th head coach on Dec. 4, 2025, bringing a former Golden Bears defensive lineman and ex-Oregon defensive coordinator back to Berkeley. UCLA countered by hiring James Madison’s Bob Chesney two days later, a coach who took the Dukes to the College Football Playoff.
Neither quarterback is new, even if the staffs are. California’s Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw for 3,454 yards and 18 touchdowns across 13 starts as a true freshman last season, and UCLA’s Nico Iamaleava, a transfer from Tennessee, passed for 1,928 yards and 13 touchdowns in his first year as a Bruin. A game with two established starting quarterbacks and two unproven staffs is why the market settled on a real number by Tuesday instead of hovering near even – the known quantity is under center, not on the headset.
| Market | Odds |
|---|---|
| Spread | UCLA -2 (-110) / California +2 (-110) |
| Moneyline | UCLA -130 / California +110 |
| Total | 53.5 (Bovada) / 53 (BetOnline) |
A Total Splitting The Difference
Bovada has the total at 53.5, BetOnline at 53 – the closest the board gets to agreement anywhere on the card. Neither book has a season of tendencies to lean on from either new play-caller. BetOnline has not moved its 53, but its juice has shifted from -110 flat to -115 on the over and -105 on the under, a small shade toward points without touching the number. How that vigorish is charged is covered on the site’s betting odds explained page.
UCLA and California kick off Saturday, Sept. 5, at 7:30 p.m. PT (10:30 p.m. ET) at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. How the market moves once Week 1 puts the first tape on file is tracked on the legal college football betting board and across legal sports betting.
