- San Diego is -225, the draw +310 and Utah +460 on the 90-minute line, with the total at 2.5 goals.
- Under 2.5 goals at +120 is the best bet, backed by nine unders in San Diego’s 15 home matches.
- Utah has not scored in three straight matches, and four of its last five finished under 2.5 goals.
- Utah at +460 is the smaller lean, with six road wins and a goal in 13 of 15 road matches.
SAN DIEGO – Under 2.5 goals at +120 is the NWSL quarterfinal pick when the Utah Royals play at the San Diego Wave on Friday night, because Utah has gone three matches without a goal and 17 of San Diego’s 30 games stayed under that line. Utah to win in 90 minutes at +460 is the smaller lean.
San Diego Has Not Lost A Match In Which It Scored
The San Diego Wave closed the regular season with 18 wins, eight losses and four draws, second in the NWSL with 58 points, three behind Gotham FC, and host the quarterfinal at Snapdragon Stadium as the higher seed. Kickoff is 10 p.m. Eastern on Prime Video, the first of the weekend’s four quarterfinals.
All eight of the Wave’s losses came without a goal, five by 0-1 and three by 0-2, which leaves them 18-0-4 in the 22 matches they scored. San Diego has not lost since a 1-0 defeat at the Seattle Reign on Sept. 6, going 6-0-1 over seven matches with 13 goals for and five against.
ESPN’s season averages put San Diego at 1.72 expected goals and 0.94 expected goals against a match, against 1.51 and 1.41 for Utah, so the Wave are the better team by chance quality as well as by the table. San Diego has scored 1.52 goals a match, 0.20 fewer than those chances were worth, and a finishing gap like that tends to close. It is the main risk to the under.
Utah Has Not Scored In Three Straight Matches
The Utah Royals ended the regular season 14-11-5, seventh with 47 points, and reached the playoffs for the first time in club history on Oct. 23 with a 0-0 draw against Seattle. That was the middle match of the drought.
Utah lost 2-0 to the Kansas City Current on Oct. 17 and 2-0 at Gotham on Nov. 1, and its last goal was in a 1-1 draw at Racing Louisville on Oct. 3. Four of the last five Utah matches finished under 2.5 goals, with totals of 3, 2, 2, 0 and 2.
The road record is steadier than that run. Utah went 6-5-4 away from home with 23 goals for and 20 against, and scored in 13 of 15 road matches.
The Royals lost both 2026 meetings, 2-1 at home on March 22 and 4-2 at San Diego on Aug. 21, and both cleared 2.5 goals. Dudinha scored in the first of them and missed the second after ESPN reported in June that scans showed a torn right ACL and meniscus suffered with Brazil.
The Board On Friday’s Quarterfinal
The soccer betting board on the quarterfinal prices San Diego at -225, the draw at +310 and Utah at +460 on the three-way line, which settles after 90 minutes. The total is 2.5 goals.
| Market | Odds | Break-even |
|---|---|---|
| San Diego to win | -225 | 69.2% |
| Draw | +310 | 24.4% |
| Utah to win | +460 | 17.9% |
| Over 2.5 goals | -160 | 61.5% |
| Under 2.5 goals | +120 | 45.5% |
The quarterfinal does not stop at 90 minutes. A level match goes to two 15-minute extra-time periods and then penalties, so the Utah ticket at +460 loses on a draw even if the Royals advance. The draw at +310 needs 24.4 percent, and only 41 of the league’s 240 regular-season matches (17.1 percent) ended level. San Diego drew 4 of 30 and Utah 5 of 30, which makes the middle price the one to skip.
Under 2.5 Goals At +120 Is The Best Bet
The under has to land 45.5 percent of the time and the over 61.5. San Diego’s matches finished under 2.5 goals 17 times in 30, nine of them in 15 home matches, where the Wave allowed 17 goals, or 1.13 a match. Utah’s matches went over 18 times in 30 and nine times in 15 road matches. Combining the two relevant splits gives 15 unders and 15 overs in 30 matches.
A 15-15 split favors the side paying +120 over the side charging -160 on any legal sports betting board.
Recent form leans the same way. Utah has not scored since Oct. 3, and ESPN’s 0.94 expected goals against for San Diego is 0.47 below Utah’s 1.41. The under cashes on a 0-0, any 1-0 or 1-1, and a 2-0 either way.
The case against is real. Both meetings this season cleared 2.5 goals, with 3 on March 22 and 6 on Aug. 21, and NWSL matches averaged 2.81 goals. A 2-1 or 3-0 San Diego win beats the ticket.
Utah At +460 Is The Smaller Lean
Utah at +460 needs to win 17.9 percent of the time in regulation. The Royals won 6 of 15 road matches (40 percent) and 14 of 30 overall (47 percent). San Diego at -225 needs 69.2 percent from a team that won 8 of 15 at home (53 percent) and 18 of 30 overall (60 percent).
The Wave went 10-3-2 on the road and 8-5-2 at home, so the home field has not added to the record. Their five home losses were all shutouts, 0-1 to Houston, Bay FC and Orlando and 0-2 to Angel City and Seattle. Utah’s path is the same low-scoring script as the under, a 1-0 or 2-0 win that cashes both tickets, and the Royals kept eight clean sheets in 30 matches.
The lean stays small. Utah is scoreless in three, lost both meetings and faces a San Diego side that has not lost in seven matches, and the ticket loses to a 90-minute draw even if the Royals win on penalties. The winner moves on to the semifinals the weekend of Nov. 13, with the NWSL Championship set for Nov. 21 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
