Skubal Returns to Comerica for First Start Against Tigers
  • Bovada’s strikeout prop for Skubal sits at 6.5, a number he has cleared in just two of his four Dodgers starts.
  • His earned-run prop is 1.5, a line he has gone over in three of those four outings despite a 2.66 FIP.
  • Detroit is a +185 underdog, has dropped eight of its last 10 and hits .230 against left-handed pitching.
  • The Dodgers-Tigers total sits at 7.5 runs, with Bovada pricing the under at -125.

DETROIT – Tarik Skubal makes his first career start against the Detroit Tigers on Friday night at Comerica Park, the ballpark where he pitched his entire Tigers career before Detroit traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 2.

The First Trip Back

Detroit sent Skubal to Los Angeles for outfield prospect Zyhir Hope and right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith, in a deal agreed Aug. 1 and announced Aug. 2, a pure rental since Skubal reaches free agency after this season. The deal shortened the Dodgers to +150 for the World Series. Skubal is the back-to-back American League Cy Young winner in 2024 and 2025, won the 2024 pitching Triple Crown, and missed time in May and June after an arthroscopic elbow procedure.

Friday is first pitch at 6:40 p.m. ET, with Drew Anderson (4-5, 4.09 ERA, 10.1 K/9) starting for a Tigers club that is 62-71, fourth in the AL Central and losers of eight of its last 10. The 80-54 Dodgers lead the NL West and are favored at -225 on Bovada’s moneyline (-206 at BetOnline), and the Tigers are +185 at both books. Los Angeles is -1.5 on the run line at -120 (Bovada) and -116 (BetOnline).

This is the opener of a three-game series, and Shohei Ohtani may start the Sunday finale, a factor that could shape how hard the Dodgers lean on their bullpen behind Skubal on Friday.

The Process Outran the Results

Skubal’s four starts since the trade have produced a 3.38 ERA against a 2.66 FIP, the kind of gap that usually reads as bad luck rather than decline. The underlying process, built only from strikeouts, walks and homers, says he has pitched better than the runs allowed.

His strikeout rate has actually ticked up with Los Angeles, from 10.80 K/9 in Detroit to 11.25 K/9 as a Dodger. What has moved the other way is the walk rate, which has roughly doubled, from 1.30 BB/9 before the trade to 2.62 BB/9 since, and that is the mechanism behind his shorter outings and a 1.13 WHIP.

The earned-run prop is where that gap shows up as a number bettors can trade. He has allowed multiple earned runs in three of his four Dodgers starts, missing the over only in a one-run outing against Milwaukee on Aug. 16. Even his best start, an 11-strikeout win over Pittsburgh on Aug. 22, cleared it with three earned runs.

Bovada prices the under at -135, a price that leans on the process finally suppressing the runs. The last month of results argues the opposite has been true more often than not, and four starts is too small a sample to call either way settled.

Comerica History and the Strikeout Prop

Skubal has been at his best in this building. His career home ERA is 2.72 against 3.41 on the road, opponents have hit about .206 against him at Comerica, and he has allowed homers at about two-thirds of his road rate there. Friday is the first time he takes that mound as the visitor.

The -170 on his strikeout prop, the steepest of his three legal sports betting props Friday, needs him to clear it roughly 63 percent of the time just to break even. His post-trade sample has him at 50 percent, two overs in four tries, with both shortfalls coming in his first two Dodgers starts.

The doubled walk rate is the reason that number carries risk. More baserunners means more pitches per out, and pitches per out is what determines whether he is still in the game to add strikeouts in the sixth and seventh.

Detroit’s Lineup Against a Lefty

The Tigers have been a weaker team against left-handed pitching all season, hitting .230 with a .688 OPS against lefties versus .244 and a .728 OPS against right-handers. Two of Detroit’s core bats wear that split. Kevin McGonigle’s OPS drops from .802 overall to .666 against lefties, and Dillon Dingler’s falls from .798 to .620.

Skubal’s hits-allowed prop sits at a pick’em, -120 on both sides of the 4.5 line, which matches his own post-trade record almost exactly, two starts over and two starts under. Skubal’s four-start Dodgers file, including his props for his Dodgers debut vs the Cubs, sets the baseline for how the market has priced him since the deal.
