- Three Dodgers prospects went to Detroit for Tarik Skubal, a two-time Cy Young winner, a day before the deadline.
- Los Angeles shortened from last week’s +190 to +150 to win the World Series, a price implying about 40 percent.
- Skubal carries a 2.79 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk ratio near 8-to-1, more than three times the league norm.
- Detroit sold while 2.5 games out of a wild-card spot and now sits at +15000, an implied 0.7 percent.
LOS ANGELES – Tarik Skubal will pitch the rest of 2026 for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who gave up three prospects to pry the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner out of Detroit a day before Monday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline. The Skubal trade dropped Los Angeles from the +190 it carried a week ago to +150 to win the World Series, with some books down to +140.
The Rumors Did Not Move The Number
Detroit agreed to send Skubal west Saturday night and the clubs announced it Sunday, with outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-hander River Ryan and right-hander Brady Smith going to Detroit, according to MLB.com. Hope is the Dodgers’ No. 5 prospect and No. 25 in baseball, Ryan their No. 7 and No. 68 overall, and Smith their No. 17.
“There just aren’t that many star-level players in the game, and any time one is available, we’re always going to participate in those conversations,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said.
The suitor list was public before the deal was. Five clubs were reported last week to be calling Detroit about Skubal, and those five held the five shortest World Series prices at MLB betting sites at the time, with Los Angeles at +190. The rumors alone did not move that number. Completing the deal did, taking the Dodgers 40 points shorter and some books to +140.
What The Shorter Price Pays
A price on a legal sports betting board is a payout, not a forecast, and the gap between the two is where the bet lives. At +190 a winning $100 ticket returned $190 in profit. At +150 it returns $150, so collecting that same $190 now costs about $127. The move is worth roughly 5 1/2 points of implied probability: +190 implies about 34.5 percent, +150 implies 40 percent and +140 implies 41.7 percent.
Forty percent on a champion is a heavy number for a tournament nobody wins by seeding alone. Assuming Los Angeles holds a top-two seed and the first-round bye that comes with it, the price implies the Dodgers win three straight postseason series, which works out to about a 74 percent clip in each round. Los Angeles is trying to make it three titles in a row after 2024 and 2025, and the last club to do that was the 1998-2000 New York Yankees.
The board behind the Dodgers is thin. The Yankees at +600 imply about 14.3 percent and the Brewers at +900 about 10 percent, and no other team is shorter than the Braves at +1100. Those three prices imply about 64 percent between them, before the other 27 clubs are counted, which is why the top of the World Series betting market pays so little now.
Whether Los Angeles wins it all more often than 40 percent of the time is the only question the price asks.
Detroit Sold From Inside The Race
The Tigers sold the best arm on the market from inside the race, 54-58 and two and a half games out of a wild-card spot. Their own championship price now reads +15000, an implied 0.7 percent and 20th on a 30-team board. Detroit was +5500 a week ago, when it was still weighing whether to move him at all.
Skubal is a pending free agent, so the Dodgers bought two months plus October rather than a long-term rotation piece. He carries a 2.79 ERA over 16 starts, with 116 strikeouts and 14 walks in 96 2/3 innings. That strikeout-to-walk ratio sits near 8-to-1 against a league norm around 2.5, and he owns a 2.03 ERA in July after returning from an elbow procedure.
He slots into a rotation that already had Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Shohei Ohtani and Tyler Glasnow. Los Angeles is 69-43, a half-game behind Milwaukee for the best record in baseball, and owns the sport’s best run differential.
Detroit’s return skews young. Hope, 21, is hitting .293/.369/.530 with 23 home runs and 18 stolen bases at Double-A. Ryan, 27, posted a 1.33 ERA in four major league starts in 2024 before Tommy John surgery. Smith, 21, has a 3.88 ERA in Class A.
Hours Left On A Live Board
Trading closes at 6 p.m. ET Monday, and every price in this market stays exposed to whatever else clears in the final hours. Skubal’s first start in Los Angeles colors is set for Tuesday at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.
