- New Mexico State is -2.5 on the spread and -130 on the moneyline, with Western Kentucky at +110 and the total at 57.5.
- Each team’s lone win came against Mercyhurst, by 37 points for New Mexico State and 45 for Western Kentucky.
- Western Kentucky’s three road losses came by an average of 41 points, while New Mexico State’s three losses came by an average of 17.
- The 57.5 total prices New Mexico State at about 30 points and Western Kentucky at about 27.5, above the Hilltoppers’ 21.5 average.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State Aggies are 2.5-point home favorites over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in Thursday night’s Conference USA opener, a matchup of 1-3 teams whose lone wins both came against the Mercyhurst Lakers. Kickoff is 8 p.m. ET at Aggie Memorial Stadium with the point total sitting at 57.5 points.
Home Field Is The Whole Spread
A 2.5-point spread on a home team is close to what home field alone is worth, so the legal sports betting market rates the teams about even on a neutral field. Las Cruces has not been a fortress against this opponent. Western Kentucky won there 41-28 in 2024 and beat the Aggies 35-16 last Nov. 1.
| Market | Odds |
|---|---|
| New Mexico State -2.5 | -110 |
| Western Kentucky +2.5 | -110 |
| New Mexico State moneyline | -130 |
| Western Kentucky moneyline | +110 |
| Over 57.5 | -110 |
| Under 57.5 | -110 |
At -130 a moneyline ticket on the Aggies breaks even only if they win about 56.5 percent of the time, a steep bar for a team that lost 42-18 to New Mexico at home last Saturday.
Same Opponent, Different Roads
New Mexico State beat Mercyhurst, an FCS program, 51-14 on Sept. 5. Western Kentucky beat it 52-7 on Sept. 26, an eight-point edge in margin. The Aggies lost 34-17 at Florida State, 29-19 at Hawaii and 42-18 to New Mexico. The Hilltoppers lost 49-14 at Nevada, 70-20 at Georgia and 38-0 at Indiana.
The bet turns on whether Western Kentucky’s road offense is real. It scored 14, 20 and 0 points in those games and gained 225 yards at Georgia and 186 at Indiana before piling up 596 against Mercyhurst.
Western Kentucky +2.5 pays if a schedule that sent it to two AP top-five teams explains the 123-point combined margin, and New Mexico State -2.5 pays if the 596 yards against an FCS defense was the exception. The college football betting board splits that question about evenly and lets home field break the tie.
The Total Asks Western Kentucky For 27.5
The 57.5 over-under and the 2.5-point spread price the Aggies at about 30 points and the Hilltoppers at about 27.5. New Mexico State has scored 26.3 points a game and allowed 29.8, and it averages 414.5 yards per game, second in Conference USA.
Western Kentucky has scored 21.5 and allowed 41.0, and it topped 27.5 in only one of four games, so the over leans on an offense doing more than it has shown outside the Mercyhurst game. Both teams turn around quickly, with New Mexico State at FIU on Oct. 7 and Western Kentucky home against Missouri State on Oct. 8.
