Bill Proposed to Revoke Chiefs Sports Betting Licenses in MO
  • Missouri State Senator Nick Schroer pre-filed a bill that removes the Kansas City Chiefs from issuing an in-person or online sports betting license because the team announced plans to move from Missouri to Kansas.
  • The changes that the bill proposes would not affect any current in-person sportsbooks or sports betting sites in Missouri, as the Chiefs never issued a license.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri State Senator Nick Schroer pre-filed a bill on December 31, 2025, that would block the Kansas City Chiefs from partnering with a sports betting operator to establish a new online or in-person sportsbook in Missouri.

The reason that the bill was filed is that the Chiefs are moving west across the Kansas River, from Kansas City, Missouri, to Kansas City, Kansas. The Chiefs had played in Missouri since 1963, but announced on December 22, 2025, that they agreed to plans to build a new stadium in Kansas.

Based on the current law in the Missouri Code of State Regulations (11 CSR 45-20), professional sports teams are allowed to issue one in-person and one online sports betting license in the state. The state regulation code explicitly states that “A team located in the state of Missouri that is a member of the National Football League…” may issue those legal sports betting licenses.

Senator Schroer’s SJR 109 bill essentially states that since the Chiefs will no longer be in the state, they should not be able to issue a license to establish any in-person or online sportsbook partnerships.

While the proposed bill makes sense on the surface, it will not change the current landscape of in-person sportsbooks or online sports betting sites in Missouri, as the Chiefs never took advantage of the licenses that they were allowed to use in a sports betting partnership.
