DOVER, Del. – Delaware, the first state to officially legalize sports betting back in 2018, has officially surpassed a $1 billion handle on sports betting all-time.
The state saw its highest grossing year in 2024, recording just over $216 million from legal sports betting, shattering the state’s previous record high of $132 million in 2019.
So far in 2025, the state has recorded a $198 million handle and is on pace to finish at around $250 million, which would once again set a new high mark for a single year.
Introduction of Mobile Sports Betting
Thanks to the addition of mobile sports betting in January 2024 Delaware residents made a sharp increase in the state’s yearly handle.
Interestingly, the state’s hold percentage (amount of the handle that the sportsbooks keep from losing bets) drastically decreased in the two years since. It dropped from an average of 16-20% all the way down to about 7.5% in 2024 and 2025.
It has been theorized in the past that mobile sports betting could be a reason that bettors have had more success, but there is no significant data to support this idea.
Since 2018, Delaware has had the worst hold percentage of any state (meaning bettors in Delaware have the lowest win rate), sitting at 14.7%, significantly higher than the nationwide average of 8.8%.
Delaware ranks 20th in total taxes collected from sports betting across all states with legal sports betting at $90 million in tax benefits.
Continuing to be a large contributor to both taxes and revenue, legal sports betting sites in Delaware have seen bettors become much sharper in recent years.
