  • Sports betting in Puerto Rico may soon launch with the new Project 1534 bill in the works.
  • Esports betting is also a part of the new bill.
  • Puerto Rico legalized sports betting back in 2019 but had no official regulations set.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Sports bettors in Puerto Rico may soon be able to partake in local retail betting as Project 1534, a new sports betting bill is in the works.

While legal sports betting has already passed in Puerto Rico’s legislature, there have been no regulations set as of yet.

The new bill would regulate sports betting as well as bring legal esports betting to the Island of Enchantment as well.

Puerto Rico Betting Market

It has been a long time coming for Puerto Rico sports betting regulations to be added, allowing retail sportsbooks to operate in the country. Now with Project 1534, an official launch is not far off.

What the Project 1534 bill does is amend the initial bill that legalized sports betting in Puerto Rico back in 2019.

The new bill will allow regulated sportsbooks to operate in Puerto Rico, but it also changes the remote sign up for online sports betting initially approved in the 2019 bill.

This means sports bettors will have to first travel to a land-based operation to register and then be able to partake in mobile and online sports betting.

Still, the excitement surrounding the potential launch of legal sports betting is evident as local officials are pushing the Project 1534 bill heavily.

“I signed PS1534 with great satisfaction,” said Wanda Vázquez Garced, former Governor of Puerto Rico. “This is a way to pave the way for Puerto Rico’s esports and sports betting industry and encourage business and work in this sector This amendment will allow us to complete and launch new industries that have the potential to create thousands of jobs.”

No official launch date has been set as of yet, but Puerto Rico becoming another state with legal sports betting shows the widespread impact of the industry worldwide.
