Freehold Raceway

  • Freehold Raceway has opened a sportsbook and entered the booming New Jersey sports betting market.
  • The racetrack location may bring in more customers by providing a closer location to place sports wagers.
  • The online platform of the sportsbook is waiting for approval and officials believe it will be done by next month.

FREEHOLD, N.J. – New Jersey sports bettors have a new location to place wagers as Freehold Raceway has become the third racing track in the state to offer sports betting.

The race track enters the US sports betting market having to deal with its local competition that includes the eight casinos in Atlantic City that also offer sports wagering.

New Jersey was one of the first states to offer legal sports betting through casinos and racetracks since June of 2018. The amount of retail and online sportsbooks has steadily grown since then.

Freehold is currently open seven days a week for guests to visit the sportsbook and is located across from the Freehold Raceway Mall and just 17 miles away from Monmouth Park, another horse track in Oceanport.

The new sportsbook may be able to get a lot of the sports bettors from the western and surrounding area part of the county who use to have to travel across town to wager on sports at Monmouth Park.

“It’s growing every day, and it’s in a great area,” said Matt Cullen, senior vice president of interactive gaming and sports for Pennsylvania’s Parx Casino, which runs the sports book at Freehold. “We’re really excited about it. As far as people in the east and the folks who live by the beaches, that’s yet to be seen. Time will tell.”

The racetrack also has three internet identities or “skins” that are waiting on the New Jersey gambling regulators to approve and Cullen says they hope to have an online/mobile sportsbook available in the next month.

This is an important factor in the success of the sportsbook because over 80% of legal sports betting in New Jersey is done on mobile devices or online platforms.

Once the Freehold sportsbook joins the online sports betting market it will have it will be able to compete even more with the other local sportsbook competitors including the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford and ResortsDigital.com.
