Men’s Freestyle 100m, 800m Underdogs To Watch At Sportsbooks

TOKYO – The men’s swimming events at the Tokyo Olympic Games are seeing gold medals given out Wednesday and there are a few underdog athletes for betting fans to take note of.

David Popovici swimming for Romania in the Men’s 100m Freestyle has long odds to win gold, but he is the current world record holder setting the record at 47.3 seconds during his Olympic qualifiers.

While those betting on the Tokyo Olympics are leaning heavily on USA swimming sensation Caeleb Dressel, longshot betting fans should be leaning in on Popovici’s +900 long odds as an upset is highly likely.

Popovici Best 100m Underdog

Popovici’s odds being as high as they are is likely due to his performance in the 200m Freestyle event failed to get a medal, finishing fourth with a time of 1:45.37, just .02 seconds shy of the bronze.

Popovici is in his first Olympic games event and is just 16 years old and high-level competition like the Olympics usually favors the experienced.

Additionally, in the semi-final round to qualify for the medal, Popovici finished 8th with a time of 48.03 compared to favorite Dressel’s 47.73 claiming the number 2 spot behind Thomas Ceccon.

Since Popovici has proven he can swim faster than anyone, however, this makes him the perfect candidate for longshot betting at legal sports betting sites.

Robert Finke Best 800m Underdog

Robert Finke of Team USA finished third in the Heat 4 semifinals for the Men’s 800m Freestyle event.

Finke posted a time an impressive time of 7:42.72 putting him well above the 7:47.67 for fourth place Serhiy Frolov of Ukraine and just below the top two spots in Florian Wellbrock of Germany (7:41.77) and first place winner and current favorite Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine (7:41.28).

Finke placed first during the 800m Freestyle Olympic trials to qualify for the Tokyo Games. He is also the only American competing in the 800m.

Finke has already proven he can keep up with the top swimmers out there, being just shy of their top two times. His +700 long odds are perfect for underdog bettors because of this.

Should Finke manage to take his speed to the next level, he can pull the upset and win the gold for Team USA.
