PHILADELPHIA – The Pennsylvania Gambling Control Board reported $726.3 million in sports betting handle for September. The return of NFL betting nearly doubled the Pennsylvania sports betting handle from August to September.

Pennsylvania made $66.1 million from legal sports betting in Sept., increasing their hold percentage from 7.8% to 9.1% since last month. September marks the highest Pennsylvania sports betting handle since Jan. 2023.

Return Of Football Season Influences High Handle

July and August combined for a $731 million legal Pennsylvania sports betting handle, roughly $5 million more than Sept. alone. The sports betting handle increased 85% from August to Sept., with Pennsylvania’s sports betting revenue increasing 116% since August.

Pennsylvania residents were eager to bet on the NFL, as promotional credits accounted for $29.5 million of the Sept. handle. Less than $16 million in promotional credits were used in July and August combined.

FanDuel Leads, DraftKings Slowly Closing Gap In PA

FanDuel led all legal online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania with a $256.4 million sports betting handle. FanDuel also led Pennsylvania sportsbooks with $30.2 million in revenue.

DraftKings finished second with a $230.48 million handle and $20.07 million in revenue for Sept. The September revenue report lists Bet MGM ($54.26), Barstool ($39.42), and Caesars ($36.23) as the other sportsbooks finishing top five in Pennsylvania sports betting handle.

Despite having the fourth-highest handle in Pennsylvania for Sept., Barstool had a -1.90% hold and lost $736k for the month. The Philadelphia Eagles went 3-0 straight up and 2-0-1 against the spread in September, which could be responsible for the losing month.
