• New York sports betting was approved at four upstate casinos during a 2013 voter referendum.

  • Construction of the luxury style sports betting lounge is expected to be completed before the start of the 2019 NFL season.

ALBANY, N.Y. – Sports fans in the New York capital area may have a new favorite destination to watch NFL games this upcoming season. Earlier this week, Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady announced the construction of their new “Rivers Sportsbook” betting lounge.

“We couldn’t be happier to start construction on our new sportsbook and we’re looking forward to opening one of the first licensed sportsbooks in the state of New York at Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady,” said Rivers Casino & Resort General Manager, Justin Moore.

The renovated area will be located adjacent to Van Slyck’s lounge and immediately off the main floor of the casino.

There will be 16 betting kiosks and a continuously updating odds board strip located at the entrance of the lounge. Rivers Casino also plans on having a total of six staffed betting windows to help those who are unsure of how to bet on sports.

Sports bettors will be met by a 53-foot-long by 9-foot-high LED video wall as soon as they walk in. The plan also includes 22 additional TV monitors at a size of 86” each.

The lounge will cover approximately 500 square feet and will be able to accommodate about 80 guests in total through club chairs and table seating. The space will also include five private booths, 18 individual VIP seats, and 32 tabletop seats.

Rivers Casino Schenectady, along with three other upstate casinos, were granted the right to offer legal sports betting as part of a 2013 voter referendum.

But, mobile sports betting apps were not specifically mentioned on the ballot that year.

Lawmakers are currently battling as to whether or not casinos such as the Rivers location in Schenectady can offer mobile wagering, but given the Governor’s stance on the matter, it doesn’t seem likely.

Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady will still have to receive approval from the New York State Gaming Commission before the new sportsbook can officially take in bets.
