Ohio Close To Banning Credit Card Deposits For Sportsbooks
  • Ohio is close to banning credit cards for depositing at local online sportsbooks.
  • A public comment process from the Ohio Casino Control Commission advanced an amendment to the state’s sports betting rules.
  • The amendment doesn’t apply to Daily Fantasy Sports operators.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A rule change to ban Ohio sportsbooks from accepting credit card deposits was unanimously moved forward by the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) on Wednesday. While many Ohio sports betting operators already ban credit card deposits, efforts to pass a statewide ban are close to success.

The rule change proposal was introduced by the OCCC in May and received approval on its first reading. Since then, a public comment window opened and closed without any substantial comments, resulting in the proposal being moved forward.

The OCCC’s leader of Regulatory Compliance, Craig Donahue, said that OCCC staff will start the filing process to hold a final vote on the amendment. If the proposal ultimately gets approved, Ohio would be one of 10 states with sports betting to ban credit card deposits.

Many Ohio Sports Betting Operators Already Ban Credit Cards

Perhaps one of the reasons why there weren’t any significant public comment against the statewide credit card ban is that many operators already have this ban in place. Leading legal sports betting operator DraftKings has a nationwide ban for funding sports betting accounts with a credit card, while other top operators like FanDuel, Fanatics Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, and bet365 have similar restrictions.

It’s also worth noting that the likely state-wide credit card ban only applies to deposits at online sportsbooks in Ohio. State-licensed DFS operators can still accept credit card deposits.

Some DFS operators expressed their concerns during the public comment period, but these operators aren’t included in the credit card deposit prohibition.
