One Year Later, Pennsylvania Sports Betting Handle Flies Past $300 Million

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Sportsbooks in Pennsylvania had a combined betting handle of $316.5 million during the month of November.

This report gives an entire scope of the first year’s success for Pennsylvania sports betting, which launched on November 17, 2018. Since then, Pennsylvania sports betting has completely changed. Sportsbooks initially launched in the state as retail the only option available. It was not until June of 2019 that mobile wagering was introduced.

Thanks to the introduction of mobile wagering, the sports betting market in Pennsylvania has only grown. The released wagering report shows that the total sports betting handle was $316.5 million. In October, that number was $241.2 million. That is a $75.3 million increase in one month.

Around 84% percent of the total wagers taken in came from online and mobile sportsbooks. Mobile wagering accounted for $266.8 million of the total handle while the retail side of things was $49.8 million.

The total amount wagered by mobile wagering in November exceeded the entire handle in October.

This is largely thanks to FanDuel. Valley Forge Casino, who has a partnership with FanDuel Sportsbook, brought in $149.7 million in online sports bets alone.

DraftKings also entered the online market in November. DraftKings expects to bring in competition to the Pennsylvania online sports betting market.

The total revenue for all the sportsbooks increased as well. The revenue for the sportsbooks in Pennsylvania was $20.6 million. In October, the revenue was $19.2 million. Although more people are wagering, more people are winning as well.

But with that much of a hold, it allowed the state of Pennsylvania to collect $5.1 million in taxes.

In the height of football season and basketball season underway, the growth of Pennsylvania sports betting has increased in November. States like Pennsylvania show exactly why states are considering legalizing mobile sports betting.
