2021 Preakness Stakes

  • Medina Spirit and trainer Bob Baffert was stripped of his Kentucky Derby win after failing a post-race drug test.
  • Medina Spirit is expected to race in the Preakness Stakes.
  • Preakness odds have Concert Tour favored to win with +130 odds without Medina Spirit listed.

BALTIMORE—Following the world’s most prestigious horse race, the Kentucky Derby, the focus has yet to shift to the Preakness Stakes as the Derby winner, Medina Spirit, was stripped of his win following a failed drug test.

With that, the track that hosts the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs, has suspended trainer, Bob Baffert, from racing at their track again. In addition, Baffert and Medina Spirit could potentially be scratched from the Preakness Stakes as well.

Going back to the status of the Kentucky Derby, Baffert and company will appeal the decision and if the decision is upheld, Mandaloun who finished a half-length behind Medina Spirit will be declared the winner. Even if declared the winner though, he is not expected to race in the Preakness.

From a betting standpoint, those that cashed out on Medina Spirits win on legal sports betting sites will not be affected. Those that also bet on Madaloun, the second-place horse, will not be able to cash that out. Also, the trainers and company involved in the scandal will have to return the prize purse.

Preakness Odds To Win

Moving on to the Preakness odds, legal sports betting sites have posted the odds without Medina Spirit listed on the odds board despite all signs pointing to him racing. In fact, Medina Spirit’s odds to win the race are favored at +350 while Concert Tour has the second shortest odds at +900.

However, being that Medina Spirit is not listed on the current odds board, Concert Tour’s odds have shot up to the favorite spot at +130.

2021 Preakness Stakes Odds To Win – Without Medina Spirit

  • Concert Tour +130
  • Midnight Bourbon +325
  • Crowded Trade +500

  • Rombauer +700
  • Unbridled Honor +1400
  • France Go De Ina +2000

Concert Tour is favored amongst the rest and rightfully so. He has been in just four races in his career and all of them have come in 2021 thus far. Of his four races though, he has won three of them. Following Concert Tour, Midnight Bourbon has the second shortest odds after finishing in sixth place in the Kentucky Derby.
