The reigning national champion Ohio State Buckeyes remain the favorite at legal sports betting sites despite losing the Big Ten Championship Game to the currently top seeded Indiana Hoosiers this past Saturday.
A major headline heading into the playoff was the final at-large bid, which ultimately was awarded to Miami over Notre Dame. Despite being ranked as the #10 team in the country, the Hurricanes are listed with the seventh best odds in the field to take home the title.
Trends For National Championship Winners
Each of the last eight national champions have ranked at least top 30 in both yards per play and opponent yards per play, while ranking inside the top four in at least one of the two. Only one national champion in the past 10 seasons did not rank top four in either (2016 Clemson).
This season, there are just three teams that meet that criteria.
- Ohio State (19th YPP / 1st OYPP)
- Texas Tech (29th YPP / 2nd OYPP)
- Tulane (21st YPP / 4th OYPP)
There are three more teams who just missed the cutoff:
- Indiana (7th YPP / 14th OYPP)
- Oregon (6th YPP / 5th OYPP)
- Miami (27th YPP / 8th OYPP)
Oklahoma ranked 6th in opponent yards per play, but 99th in yards per play, while the rest of the teams in the field did not rank top ten on either side of the ball.
Here are the best bets to win the national championship broken up into tiers:
Tier 1: The Favorites
- Ohio State Buckeyes (+240): They’ve been the best team in the country for the majority of the season and own the best defense for the second consecutive season. There’s a reason why they still sit atop the odds college football betting sites.
Tier 2: Best Value
- Texas Tech Red Raiders (+800): The Red Raiders have allowed 20+ points just twice all season and less than 10 points in each of their last four games. Their offense is not quite elite, but they have a defense that can compete with anyone.
- Oregon Ducks (+800): The Ducks are the only team in the country to rank top ten in both yards per play and opponent yards per play. Their only loss came to current #1 seed Indiana before winning their last six games of the season.
Tier 3: Top, Bottom, and Middle
- Indiana Hoosiers (+290): The only remaining undefeated team in the country, the Hoosiers have been dominant all season long. However, they may have the most difficult path to the title of any team, with Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Oregon all on their side of the bracket.
- Miami Hurricanes (+2000): Despite barely sneaking into the playoffs, Miami has shown flashes of dominance this season that few others can replicate. An experienced, talented team (especially in the trenches), no one wants to face the Hurricanes.
- Tulane Green Wave (+75000): The Green Wave are one of three teams in the country to meet the criteria of the last eight national champions and have the longest odds in the field. Why not give them a shot?
