DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers are weighing whether to trade Tarik Skubal before baseball’s Aug. 3 deadline. Moving the two-time American League Cy Young winner would pull him off a club priced at +4500 to win the World Series and hand him to one of the contenders above it.
What Detroit Is Weighing
Detroit is “at least mulling the possibility” of a Skubal swap built to keep the club competitive now and stronger later, MLB.com reported on July 22, citing Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic.
The asking price in that reporting is an MLB-ready starting pitcher plus multiple prospects. Ryan Weathers of the Yankees, Andrew Painter of the Phillies, and Emmet Sheehan and Justin Wrobleski of the Dodgers were among the arms floated as the return.
That is a sell-and-buy structure rather than a teardown, and Detroit’s position explains why. The Tigers were 22-38 entering June. They enter play Monday at 50-56, 3.5 games behind Cleveland for the third American League wild card, close enough that a straight sale of the best pitcher on the market would read as quitting on a live race.
Skubal reaches free agency after the World Series, the pressure sitting under every version of this decision. He told ESPN on July 23 that he wants to finish the year in Detroit. “Going into spring training and the whole offseason, I’ve never been more motivated to try and win a World Series for this city,” he said.
Where Detroit Sits On The World Series Board
Wanting does not move a number. Detroit is +4500 to win the World Series on the futures board, a price that implies roughly 2% before the book’s margin. The Dodgers sit at +165 odds, implying about 38 percent, with the Brewers +1000 and the Braves +1100 next in line.
Read those prices together and the trade logic gets blunt. Detroit sat 13th among the 18 clubs listed on that World Series board, behind both the Guardians and the White Sox, the two teams atop its own division. The clubs that can pay Detroit’s asking price are the ones the market already trusts, and evaluators in that reporting called the Dodgers the best match, citing their prospect depth and the controllable starters already in their rotation.
A price is what a book pays out, not what a season will do. Whether Detroit’s real chance of winning it all beats the 2% its number implies is the question in front of the front office, and the legal sports betting market has the Tigers priced as a longshot.
Skubal’s Line And The Workload Caveat
Skubal is 7-5 with a 2.70 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP and 110 strikeouts in 90 innings across 15 starts. The WHIP is the figure that travels furthest. Anything under 1.10 is excellent against a league baseline nearer 1.30, and 0.92 means he is allowing fewer than one baserunner an inning. The strikeout total works out to 11 per nine innings.
The caveat is volume, not stuff. Skubal had elbow surgery May 6 and did not pitch again until June 13, so 90 innings is a partial season. An acquiring club would be paying prospect capital for roughly two months of starts plus whatever October it buys.
Detroit has until 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 3 to decide.
