Will Amazon crash during Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

  • Amazon has been a top online retailer for years, taking the business away from brick and mortar establishments.
  • They will be holding their annual Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales this year, but will they be able to handle the traffic?
  • Bovada sportsbook has listed a prop bet on whether or not the site will crash during these sales days.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Will Black Friday or Cyber Monday cause Amazon’s website to crash? A new prop bet on Bovada favors on the side of no (-600) outages on either day. For those that believe they will, odds are set at +350. Amazon experienced a website crash on “Prime Day” which is an exclusive sale on the site for all of their Prime members. The crash occurred in July of this year.

Prime Day was actually a two-day sale that resulted in over 175 million items being sold. The shopping holiday sold more products than that of both Black Friday and Cyber Monday’s combined sales for 2018. During their Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales from last year, they sold a combined total of $17.8 billion in products. They were the number one internet retailer in terms of sales for those days.

The crash on Prime Day happened within the first 15 minutes of the sale due to worldwide traffic. The site put fallback procedures into place to handle the numerous glitches that were popping up. Should they crash again during their Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales, they now have a known protocol to handle the traffic, which began with ceasing international sales.

Due to last year’s sales numbers, Amazon should have no problem with crashes. Bovada’s odds look to be on par with what the website has been known to handle. Will this year’s numbers surpass that of last year and come closer to the numbers for Prime Day and result in a crash? Only time will tell.
