KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was cleared Friday to take part fully in training camp, seven months after tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee. NFL sportsbooks have him tied for third on the NFL MVP board at +1000 odds.
Kansas City’s own price sits nowhere near that tier. The Chiefs are +1600 to win Super Bowl LXI, tied with Philadelphia and New England and paying nearly three times what the Los Angeles Rams pay.
Seven Months, Not Nine
Mahomes tore the knee Dec. 14 in a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The injury ended his season, knocked Kansas City out of playoff contention for the first time in his tenure as the starter and left the Chiefs at 6-11.
A standard ACL reconstruction carries a nine-to-12-month return window before a player is cleared to play. Mahomes was cleared to practice at seven months. Dan Cooper, the Dallas Cowboys team physician who repaired both ligaments in December, signed off days before the Chiefs reported. Reid said Mahomes has been cleared “to go ahead and participate fully”, while adding that the staff would take the workload day by day.
The clearance covers every period of practice, team drills included. That is the part of camp a rebuilt knee has to survive before September means anything.
What The MVP Board Actually Pays
A +1000 MVP ticket pays $1,000 on a $100 stake, a price implying about 9%. That is what the book is willing to pay, not a forecast of what happens. Josh Allen is the shortest number at +550, about 15% implied, with Lamar Jackson at +650, roughly 13%. Joe Burrow shares Mahomes’ +1000, and Drake Maye is next at +1100, near 8%.
Whether a 30-year-old quarterback coming off a torn ACL and LCL has a better or worse than 9% shot at a third MVP is the entire wager. Season-long award markets like this one post across legal sports betting boards weeks before a snap, carry a wider margin than a single-game moneyline and tie the stake up for a full season.
The Team Number Did Not Move With Mahomes
The Super Bowl LXI board reads like a market pricing a roster rather than a return.

The 32 prices on that Super Bowl board add to roughly 123 percent of implied probability, so about 23 points of that total is the book’s margin on the market. The longest number on the board belongs to the Arizona Cardinals at +40000, a $100 ticket that would pay $40,000.
The Comeback Market Called It First
The comeback market had already made its read before Reid spoke. Comeback Player of the Year markets had Mahomes at +185 on July 16, the shortest price among 27 listed names and implying about 35%. Jayden Daniels was next at +400, Kyler Murray at +550, Micah Parsons at +1200 and Malik Nabers at +1300.
That board has stayed the same since July 16, eight days before the clearance, so it is not a reaction to Friday’s news. It is a book pricing the rehab timeline in advance, and the timeline held.
Kansas City opens the season against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14 in the Monday Night Football window, about seven weeks after Mahomes’ first cleared practice.
