Should BetMGM Be Your Next Sportsbook?

Four points belong up front, before you get attached to any of it.

• BetMGM is live in 25 jurisdictions as of August 2026, checked against its own current state list. That means 23 mainland states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. Whether yours is one of them is the first thing to settle.
• Credit cards are gone. New and existing credit cards stopped working as a funding method this spring, so plan on a debit card, a bank transfer or an e-wallet.
• BetMGM caps how much some winning bettors can stake. Not a forum rumor, either. The company has discussed the practice on the record with a state regulator.
• Two people should look elsewhere. If you win often enough to trip that limit, or if shaving a couple of cents off the price of every bet is the thing you care about most, BetMGM is the wrong book for you.

BetMGM takes bets in 23 mainland states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico as of August 2026, 25 jurisdictions in all, checked against BetMGM’s own current state list. Missouri is the newest, live since December 1, 2025, roughly a year after voters narrowly approved a ballot measure and the Missouri Gaming Commission cleared a launch date. One more launch moves that count, so treat 25 as an August 2026 figure and nothing older.

Legal sports betting in the United States runs state by state, and BetMGM’s map reflects that patchwork exactly. New Jersey was one of its original online-and-retail markets, and New Jersey sports betting is still among the deepest operations the book runs anywhere, with a full retail counter and an app both operating under the Borgata license.

Read the regulator column as carefully as the status column. The regulator is the body a complaint escalates to when BetMGM’s own support cannot resolve something.

Where BetMGM Is Not Live

Florida, Oregon, Vermont and Maine are the four to name, and each has a different, checkable reason that has nothing to do with BetMGM’s quality.

Oregon earns a second look, because plenty of write-ups still get it wrong. Spirit Mountain Casino in Grand Ronde ran a BetMGM-branded sportsbook for several years. The casino’s own site now describes a self-operated, unbranded betting lounge with 12 kiosks and no online wagering, and BetMGM appears nowhere on the property’s current pages. Anyone still promising you an Oregon retail counter is describing a partnership that already ended.

In a state with a single licensed book, there is no second price to check a line against. A bad number just sits there instead of getting undercut the way it would in a state running eight competing apps. None of that is a knock on BetMGM. It is how a one-operator market behaves.

Two States That Work Differently

Mississippi and Nevada both read as “live” on a flat state list, and both mislead anyone who stops there.

Mississippi ties mobile wagering to the physical grounds of a licensed casino under state law. You can download the BetMGM app anywhere, but it only accepts a wager while your phone sits on the property of Beau Rivage in Biloxi, BetMGM’s only footprint in the state. Lawmakers have tried to pass statewide mobile betting in back-to-back sessions and failed both times.

Nevada wants a one-time in-person visit. Register on the app, then finish identity verification at a physical BetMGM sportsbook before the account will accept a wager. After that single trip, betting works from anywhere inside state lines. One visit, ever, whatever you may have heard.

Who Holds the License

In most states, BetMGM is not the license holder. A casino or tribal entity holds the license and BetMGM operates under it, sometimes as the platform provider, sometimes doing business under the BetMGM name directly. That matters on the day you need to file a complaint.

These relationships shift when a license renews under a different structure, so check the current entry against your state’s own licensee list before you file anything. One New Jersey wrinkle. BetMGM and Borgata Sports are the same book behind two brands there, so holding accounts at both buys you no second, independent set of prices or limits. It is one book wearing two names.

Where you stand when you place the bet is the test, and where you live has nothing to do with it. A Connecticut bettor can open the BetMGM app and bet while standing in New Jersey. A New Jersey resident on holiday in Texas cannot, whatever the driver’s license says.

Eligibility comes down to your age, your location, your identity and one list of people barred outright.

• Age. Twenty-one in nearly every BetMGM state. Wyoming is the exception in statute, setting the floor at 18, and BetMGM’s own Wyoming promotional page tells sports bettors they “must be 18 years old.” The registration screen is the version that binds, so confirm it there before you plan around it.
• Geolocation. Software does the enforcing everywhere, and it fails in predictable ways. Border towns are the classic case, where a phone near a state line registers on the wrong side of it. Desktop browsers need a separate location plugin plenty of people skip, then cannot work out why a legitimate account keeps refusing bets. A VPN does not fool the system, and using one gets your account closed.
• Identity. Registration asks for your name, date of birth, home address and the last four digits of your Social Security number. That last item alarms people more than it should. It confirms who you are against public records and handles tax reporting if a win is big enough to trigger it.
• Who is barred. BetMGM employees, league and team employees, athletes, coaches and officials in the sports on the board, and anyone on a state self-exclusion list, which gets checked automatically the moment an account registers.

The Offer

BetMGM’s live welcome offer is a first-bet safety net, checked against its own current promotion terms. Lose your opening wager and the stake comes back as bonus bets, up to $1,500, on a minimum deposit of $10 and a first bet of at least $10. Which version you get depends entirely on your state.

• The $1,500 safety net, in 18 jurisdictions. Arizona, Colorado, Washington, D.C., Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and Wyoming.
• Bet $10, get $150 in bonus bets, in Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It pays only if your qualifying first bet wins, and it pays in bonus bets, never cash.
• No verified welcome offer in Nevada, New York or Puerto Rico. No sourced offer exists for any of the three as of August 2026.

Bonus codes, sometimes called promo codes, are tracking tags, not different deals. A code tells BetMGM which partner sent your signup. What you receive is set by the state you register in, not the string you type into the box, unless a specific partner code carries different terms of its own. Sportsbook bonuses move on their own schedule, so price these August 2026 figures against the live terms in your state before you commit anything.

What the Terms Cost You

The headline number meets the math here.

The split matters as much as that rule. Lose a qualifying bet of $50 or more and BetMGM issues five separate bonus bets instead of one at the full amount. Lose a bet under $50 and you get a single bonus bet for the whole stake.

Four more terms matter before that first bet goes down.

• Bonus bets expire seven days after they post. No extension, no partial credit for whatever you leave unused. Five separate wagers to find, place and settle inside a week.
• The wagering requirement is light. A bonus bet settles straight to cash the first time you use it, win or lose, with no rollover multiple stacked on top. It is one of the better terms on this offer if it still holds when you claim.
• Cashing out, auto-cashing-out or editing the qualifying first bet before it settles voids the whole thing. Place your opening wager and leave it alone.
• One account per person means you claim this once, ever. Moving to a new state does not reset it.

Put the terms to work on a full example. Bet $1,500, lose it, and take the five $300 bonus bets at a standard -110 price. Win all five and BetMGM credits $272.73 apiece, $1,363.64 in total, against the $1,500 you lost to earn them. Nobody wins all five. At a realistic 50% strike rate across five coin-flip-priced bets, those same five tickets return closer to $680 in cash, and you still have to find five separate bets inside seven days.

Registration takes about five minutes when nothing goes wrong.

Step 1: Confirm Your State and Register

Pick your state from BetMGM’s own list, then enter your name, date of birth and address. On a desktop browser, install the separate geolocation plugin before you go any further. Skipping it is the single most common reason a fresh signup cannot place a bet.

Step 2: Verify Your Identity

Supply the last four digits of your Social Security number, choose a username and password, and grant location permission. Most verifications clear immediately. When one does not, the cause is usually dull. An address that fails to match public records after a recent move, a name that differs slightly from the one on your ID, or a credit file too thin for the system to confirm on its own. Any of those drops you into manual document review, which is hours instead of minutes, occasionally a day or two.

Watch for one specific snag. An existing MGM Rewards profile from a casino trip can push the system to recover that old login instead of opening a fresh sportsbook account. One account per person is the rule, and enforcement tightened after a 2026 regulatory finding.

Step 3: Fund the Account and Attach the Offer

Attach the welcome offer before your first wager settles. There is no applying it after the fact. Choose your funding method with the exit in mind, because how you put money in shapes how you get paid later.

Step 4: Finish In Person, If You’re in Nevada

Nevada adds one more non-negotiable step. Visit a physical BetMGM sportsbook with ID before the account will accept a single wager. Everywhere else, step three is the last one.

The reason is on the record. A $100,000 fine, carried in that same Pennsylvania consent agreement, over know-your-customer gaps that let accounts open on other people’s identifying information and fund with stolen payment devices, across both the BetMGM and Borgata platforms.

BetMGM’s remaining sportsbook deposit methods, and the matching payout route, look like this.

Card withdrawals carry their own restriction, separate from the deposit stop above. BetMGM will not pay a credit card back out at all in Iowa, Tennessee, Massachusetts, New York or Illinois.

How Long a Withdrawal Takes

Every withdrawal clears an internal review before your payout method’s own transit time even starts, up to 3-5 business days by BetMGM’s own account. Only when that clears does the clock on your chosen method begin. A method advertised as “within 24 hours,” like PayPal, can take the better part of a week once that review is stacked on top, and a card withdrawal requested on a Friday can be a week and a half out before it lands.

Three more mechanics shape how long your money takes to arrive.

• The closed-loop system. BetMGM pays a withdrawal back across the methods you deposited with, proportional to what you funded on each. Use three methods and one withdrawal can split into three payments on three separate timetables. Deposit with a single method that also works for payout and you avoid the split entirely.
• The re-deposit window. A first withdrawal to a given method generally requires that you deposited with that same method inside a recent window, commonly cited as six months, though BetMGM’s current terms are vague on the exact figure. Think about the exit when you pick a funding method, and not only the entrance.
• Crypto. Not offered, and structurally it cannot be. A licensed sportsbook settles in dollars over banked, auditable rails, and that is the whole point of holding a license.

BetMGM’s board covers every major US league, the biggest soccer competitions, tennis, golf, combat sports, motorsport and a deep futures menu that opens months ahead of a season. Bet types run the full range too. Moneylines, spreads, totals, player and game props, same-game parlays, teasers, round robins and if-bets.

Price a mainline spread or total at BetMGM and you get -110 on both sides, the industry-typical figure for the bet type. BetMGM does not break out its own hold or vig anywhere, so treat -110 as a representative live price and not an audited company number.

A -110 price implies a win rate of about 52.38%. Both sides of that two-way market add up to roughly 104.8%, and the gap between that and 100% is the book’s hold, close to 4.5% at -110. Say it precisely. You need to win about 52.38% of these bets to break even. No single outcome has a 52.38% chance of happening. The price implies a probability, the true probability of the outcome is a separate and unknown figure, and every dollar anybody wins or loses betting comes out of the gap between the two.

Live market depth holds up during marquee events, with prices refreshing continuously through a full Sunday slate.

College player props are banned by state regulation in 12 of BetMGM’s states, checked against BetMGM’s own state-by-state breakdown. A licensed book cannot offer what a state’s regulator forbids, so a missing quarterback-yardage market on a college game is compliance working as intended and not a gap in the app.

The picture carries more texture than a flat ban list.

• Banned outright. Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.
• Allowed with a timing restriction. Indiana permits college props before kickoff and pulls them once the game goes live. West Virginia carries a narrower rule affecting college basketball props in postseason tournaments other than the NCAA Tournament.
• Allowed generally, barred on in-state teams and athletes. Illinois, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.
• No state-level restriction. Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina and Wyoming.

None of this is theoretical. On December 12, 2025, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission fined BetMGM $60,000 after a hearing found roughly 20,398 wagers, totaling about $360,901 in handle, placed on markets outside BetMGM’s approved Massachusetts catalog between March 2023 and June 2024. The largest single piece of that total, by both count and dollars, was NCAA college football player-prop parlays. The rest covered other out-of-catalog markets, including foreign soccer penalty cards, a barred international soccer league, and a handful of smaller college and combat-sports props. Step over the college-prop boundary and it carries a price.

State legislatures have moved toward more restriction on college props through 2026, not less, following a run of point-shaving cases nationally. Do not assume an open state stays open.

BetMGM caps how much some bettors, mostly winning ones, are allowed to stake. The mechanism sits in BetMGM’s own regulator-approved house rules, checked against the current Massachusetts version. On paper the wagering range runs from a ten-cent minimum to a $10 million theoretical maximum, but BetMGM sets your actual minimum and maximum per patron, per event.

Protection runs the other way too. A payout limit can only be set by limiting what a bet accepts in the first place, never applied after the fact to shrink a winning wager the book already took. That is on the record for Massachusetts, and it is fair to treat it as BetMGM’s practice everywhere else.

Massachusetts is the best-documented case because state regulation forced the disclosure, not because BetMGM only limits players there. Two figures came out of that testimony, and they are worth keeping separate.

• BetMGM’s own senior director of compliance told the Massachusetts Gaming Commission the company limits roughly 1% of its Massachusetts patrons.
• The commission’s own later analysis put the figure closer to 0.64%, about 13,400 accounts out of roughly 2.1 million active ones.

That same testimony named four triggers, and three of them are things an ordinary recreational bettor could stumble into without meaning to.

• Consistently beating odds errors before traders can correct them.
• Syndicate betting, meaning wagering on someone else’s behalf.
• Courtsiding, placing live bets from inside a venue ahead of what the book sees.
• Sharply inconsistent stake sizing.

In most states you get no notification. You simply find your usual stake capped the next time you go to place it, typically a staircase down in maximum bet size, and the account itself stays open. Parlay and same-game-parlay ceilings stay generous while straight-bet limits get squeezed, which tells you plainly what kind of action BetMGM wants from a winning bettor.

Massachusetts Now Requires Disclosure

Since June 1, 2026, Massachusetts regulation has required every licensed sports wagering operator to notify a limited bettor within 48 hours, state a specific reason and name the affected markets. The rule applies retroactively, covering accounts limited before it took effect. Massachusetts sports betting is the first state to demand that much daylight on limiting, and no other state had matched it as of August 2026.

BetMGM rebuilt its app ahead of a recent football season. Faster navigation, a reworked parlay builder, a redesigned rewards dashboard. Version 26.08.04, current as of mid-August 2026, carries a 4.8-star rating from roughly 261,000 App Store ratings.

The same-game parlay builder is the standout feature, and it earns the same pricing scrutiny a single bet gets. A two-way -110 price carries roughly a 4.5% hold. Chain those legs into a parlay and the margin compounds instead of staying flat, roughly 8.9% on two legs, climbing to 13.0% on three, 17.0% on four and 20.8% by five. The easiest tool in the app also carries the widest margin. No scandal in that, just a sign of which product BetMGM most wants you building.

A handful of house-rule mechanics rarely make a review, and each one is useful before you need it.

• The bet slip defaults to making you acknowledge every price move before a bet confirms, with a setting to accept all changes automatically or accept only better ones. Most books do not offer that protection out of the box.
• You get a 15-minute window to report an accidental duplicate or mistaken bet to support before it is treated as final.
• Cash out is discretionary. It can be pulled during a live suspension, and even an accepted cash out can be reversed later if BetMGM determines the price behind it was a technical or settlement error.
• Correlated legs have to go through the same-game-parlay builder instead of being stacked by hand into a standard parlay. A manually built correlated parlay can be voided in part or in full after the fact, where an SGP prices the correlation directly.

Every accepted live wager clears a brief acceptance delay, a few seconds while BetMGM revalidates that the price is still good. Every book applies that pause.

On devices, iOS handles location permission more smoothly than Android, which occasionally needs its location setting checked by hand. One recurring complaint is fair enough. Live chat support sits several taps into the app and is genuinely hard to find, a gap in an otherwise well-built product.

Every account is enrolled automatically at registration into a dual-currency loyalty program. BetMGM Rewards Points are what you spend. MGM Tier Credits are what set your status. Sportsbook, casino and poker play all feed the same account.

The earn rate tilts hard toward parlays. A straight bet earns a minimum of 20 Rewards Points and 20 Tier Credits per $100 staked. A parlay earns a minimum of 50 of each per $100, roughly two and a half times more for the wider-margin bet type. No loyalty rate ever outruns a worse price on the underlying bet, so read the parlay skew as a fact about what the program rewards and keep betting the way you were.

The program has two blind spots.

• BetMGM does not publish what a single point converts to in bonus bets or cash, and its terms reserve the right to change that value.
• The hospitality payoff sits outside the app entirely. Tier credits convert into MGM Resorts room rates, dining and show tickets, so if Las Vegas and Atlantic City hold no interest for you, the base earn rate is all you get.

Support comes through live chat, email and a help center, and it has the same findability problem the app does. Chat sits several taps deep and is easy to give up on before you reach it.

The escalation route is where “licensed” and “regulated” mean something concrete instead of marketing language. BetMGM’s own terms rule out class or representative arbitration for disputes, so an individual complaint to the state gaming commission that issued the license is the leverage you have when in-house support will not resolve something. Massachusetts is the clearest example. Its Gaming Commission runs a complaint channel of its own, separate from BetMGM entirely, built for exactly this.

Responsible-gambling tools work best set up before you need them.

• Deposit limits run daily, weekly or monthly, and they are asymmetric. A decrease applies immediately, an increase is delayed by roughly a day or until the next period, and limits aggregate across every state on a multi-state account instead of resetting per state.
• A time-out runs from 24 hours up to several weeks.
• Self-exclusion runs from six months up to several years and propagates across every state on a multi-state account, with Puerto Rico excluded from that propagation.
• A pending wager is typically canceled and refunded, not forfeited, if you self-exclude mid-bet, which removes the usual excuse for waiting.

Set a deposit limit at signup, while the amount is abstract and costs you nothing emotionally to pick. Not after a bad week, which is exactly when every reason not to set one shows up.

Three points, once everything is priced in.

1. Confirm your state and that state’s current offer before anything else matters. Both move. The state list already changed once this year with Missouri’s launch, and it has already been misreported once, with an Oregon retail counter that no longer exists.
2. The playthrough on the bonus is genuinely light once it unlocks, a single pass and no more, but the value sits well below the advertised figure once the split and the seven-day window are priced in. The worked example is closer to what you will see.
3. BetMGM fits two readers badly. If you win consistently enough to get limited, or the price on every single bet is what you care about most, look elsewhere. Everyone else gets a deep app for the cost of a five-minute signup.
