Browns Tied For First, Yet +1500 In AFC North Odds
  • The Cleveland Browns are 3-1 and level with the Baltimore Ravens for first, yet Cleveland is +1500 in the latest AFC North odds.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers lengthened from +900 to the same +1500 as Cleveland, while Baltimore shortened from -135 to -145.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals lost 22-17 at home to the Jacksonville Jaguars as 2.5-point favorites yet are still +180.
  • The board’s order follows net EPA per play, with Baltimore ninth, Cincinnati 12th, Pittsburgh 20th and Cleveland 21st.

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Browns share first place in the AFC North at 3-1 with the Baltimore Ravens, yet the AFC North odds list Cleveland at +1500, level with the 2-2 Pittsburgh Steelers. A $100 bet at that price returns $1,600 with the stake. Cleveland was +2500 before the board registered its Thursday night win, 27-24 over Pittsburgh.

The Board Repriced Toward Cleveland, Away From Pittsburgh

The AFC North odds moved between Friday morning’s board and Monday’s. Cleveland shortened from +2500 to +1500, and Pittsburgh lengthened from +900 to +1500, so the Browns and the team they beat now carry the same number. Friday’s board matched the one posted after Week 3, and Cincinnati is the only team that did not move.

Pittsburgh’s slide of 3.8 percentage points was the largest on the board. It leaves a 2-2 team that lost at Cleveland level with the team that beat it.

The Browns and Ravens are both 3-1, and Cleveland leads on division record at 1-0 to Baltimore’s 0-0. At +1500, a Cleveland bet breaks even only if the Browns win the division one time in 16. Baltimore has all six of its division games ahead, two of them against Cleveland, while the Browns have five left.

Efficiency, Not The Standings, Sets The Order

By net EPA per play, offense minus defense, Baltimore ranks ninth at +0.06, Cincinnati 12th at +0.04, and Pittsburgh and Cleveland 20th and 21st at -0.04 each, according to nflverse data through four games. The board follows that order and treats the Steelers and Browns as equals, with the two teams’ efficiency all but identical. Four games is the low end of the four to six that team EPA needs to settle, and the figures are not adjusted for opponent.

Cleveland’s record is carrying more of its case than its play. The offense sits 13th at 0.01 EPA per play, the defense ranks 24th in EPA allowed, and the point differential is minus-14. Wins by 4, 3 and 3 points sit against a 34-10 loss at Jacksonville in Week 1.

Baltimore Shortens Despite Failing To Cover

The Ravens beat the Tennessee Titans 24-18 at home Sunday as favorites of 11 to 11.5 points, so they did not cover, and their division price still moved from -135 to -145. The move is 1.7 percentage points, small against a tie atop the standings, and it fits a team with the division’s best point differential at plus-20. The offense ranks seventh at 0.10 EPA per play, while the defense is the exposure at 21st in EPA allowed.

Cincinnati Holds +180 After A Home Loss

Jacksonville won 22-17 at Paycor Stadium, where the Bengals were 2.5-point favorites. Cincinnati is 2-2 and 0-1 in the division, a game behind Cleveland and Baltimore, and its +180 is unchanged from Friday morning. That price implies 35.7%. Pittsburgh is also 2-2, beat Cincinnati 30-27 in Week 3 and is 1-1 in the division to Cincinnati’s 0-1, yet its price implies only 6.25%.

Across legal sports betting markets, that 29.5-point gap between two teams with the same record shows the board rating Cincinnati’s plus-12 point differential and 12th-ranked net EPA above the head-to-head result.

The next slate for legal NFL betting comes Oct. 11, when Cleveland visits the New York Jets and Baltimore visits the Atlanta Falcons. The Ravens then play at Cleveland on Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. ET, the first of two meetings.
