Ameristar Casino Hotel East Chicago has been responsible for almost half the betting handle in the state.

  • Over $1 million was collected by the Indiana state government in taxes from October sports betting in Indiana.
  • Ameristar East Chicago was responsible for over 50% of Indiana’s combined monthly sports betting handle.
  • Sports bettors in Indiana spent their focus on football, which saw a handle of $41,052,776 for the month.

INDIANAPOLIS – During October, sports bettors were quite active at the ten state-licensed sportsbooks in Indiana. A total of $91.7 million was risked by bettors for the month, marking a 260% increase from September.

This betting handle was higher than many states that have had active sports betting for much longer, such as Mississippi, West Virginia, and Delaware. In fact, it currently represents a tenth of all reported states’ betting handles for October but this will certainly decrease with Nevada still unreported.

From the total amount wagered, $11.5 million was kept by the books as revenue. Receiving a winning margin of 12.58%, Indiana books won at a higher rate than every reported state except Mississippi and Delaware.

As 9.5% of the sportsbooks’ revenue is contributed to the Indiana state government as taxes, the state received just under $1.1 million for the month.

Legal Indiana Sports Betting Notes

Ameristar East Chicago comprised just over 50% of the entire betting market ($46.2 million). Being only minutes from Chicago, this book is likely seeing plenty of action from Illinois sports bettors who are still awaiting their state’s launch.

Horseshoe Southern Indiana finished the month with the second-highest betting handle and revenue. The $10.7 million handle and $1.7 million in revenue helped the sportsbook be responsible for nearly 15% of the sportsbooks’ collective monthly tax contribution.

With the third-highest betting handle during October ($7,057,675), French Lick Casino wished their sports betting regulars visited a different sportsbook. The bettors only allowed French Lick to keep 7.86% of that handle – the lowest in the state for the month.

Bettors have started exploring other markets. While $41.1 million was bet on football in Indiana, the “other” category (golf, tennis, soccer, hockey, etc.) increased from half-a-million in September to over $12 million in October.

Parlays rang in the second-highest market handle, as just over $20 million was risked on parlays in Indiana during October.
