Fantasy Football Lineup

  • Louisiana approved daily fantasy sports legislation over two years ago.
  • Operators can start applying for licenses in February.
  • The final regulations for fantasy sports betting have been approved and the launch could begin as early as April.

BATON ROUGE, La.Daily fantasy sports (DFS) may finally launch in Louisiana as operators will be able to apply for licenses in February.

With the final regulations being approved, and the applications beginning soon, DFS providers could be able to supply games as early as April or May.

Louisiana became one of the many states to legalize DFS two years ago, but it has taken some time for the regulations to be set. Local players may soon get their hands-on fantasy sports betting.

DFS in Louisiana

With DFS, Louisiana players will be able to build their own rosters and compete against other virtual teams every day to win real-world money.

Players in the Pelican State have been waiting for this launch for some time now. The goal of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board was to ensure the regulations were set as far as taxes and the total operator limit before launch.

The applications can begin being submitted from February 19 and the state policy dictates a 60-90 day period for the proper investigations needed to approve an operator.

Based on the time frame, April or May will be the launch month for fantasy sports in Louisiana.

Louisiana players are expected to heavily embrace the market, as the 2018 vote saw 47 of the 64 Louisiana parishes vote in favor of launching fantasy sports.

The fantasy sports market will also be an early indication of how the Louisiana sports betting market will look once it launches. The Pelican State passed legal sports betting into law in November 2020.

The time frame for the launch of the sports betting market in the Pelican State could be a few years off based on the DFS launch, meaning local bettors will only have DFS options for some time.

Still, an early success in the DFS market may be a good sign of what sports betting could look like in terms of revenue. This could motivate lawmakers to work faster in finalizing the regulations.
