DraftKings and Fanduel are close to launching mobile sports betting in West Virginia.

  • The first mobile sports wagering app in West Virginia launched in December of 2018 but ended operation in March of 2019 due to contract disputes.
  • The two West Virginia sports betting apps expected to launch are the ones provided by DraftKings and FanDuel.
  • The money wagered through the BetLucky sports wagering outpaced both of the retail locations it was tethered to.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – After almost six months without a sports betting app in West Virginia, it appears that the Mountaineer State will welcome two new ones in the near future.

“I can say we’re getting very close,” said state Lottery Director John Myers to the WVmetronews.  “Testing is completed on one and ongoing on another. I don’t have an official roll-out date yet.”

He then added that he believes it will be some time next week before college football season officially begins.

As far as what types of apps will launch, many around the industry believe that one will be provided by DraftKings through their partnership with Hollywood Casino at Charlestown Races and the other will be provided by FanDuel via their agreement with The Greenbrier.

In a press release issued by the West Virginia Lottery in June of 2019, testing of the DraftKings W.V. sports betting app was successful. But, because of the location of the servers and compliance issues with the Federal Wire Act, the launch was delayed.

“We’ve wanted to see it up and running as much as anybody. I know there’s some concern that it’s taken a while but when you do something for the time you have to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. Now we think we’re there,” said Myers.

The apps wouldn’t be the first time West Virginians used their smartphones to bet on sports.

In December of 2018, Delaware North, owner of Wheeling Island Casino and Mardis Gras Casino, launched the BetLucky app. However, in March of 2019, the app as well as sports betting operation for both casinos were shut down due to contract disputes between Delaware North and other companies.

During that time the BetLucky app actually outperformed both casinos locations it was tethered to. In February the app was able to take in a handle of more than $210,000 from Mardi Gras Casino and about $145,000 from Wheeling Island Casino.

Sports betting in West Virginia reached its largest statewide handle in January of 2019 when the app was in operation and football season was still in effect.
