New York sports betting revenue in November fell by almost half.

  • Only the four commercial casinos in upstate New York report their sportsbook’s gross gaming revenue.
  • The state’s four commercial casinos only generated $1.3 million in gross gaming revenue for November as opposed to $2.2 million generated in October.
  • Mobile sports betting was not legalized during the 2019 legislative session, but legislators have indicated that they will make a push for it in 2020.

NEW YORKSports betting revenue in New York has taken an unexpected and significant dip for the month of November.

According to the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC), the state’s four commercial casinos reported a 41% month-on-month decrease in terms of their sportsbook’s gross gaming revenue.

Tiago Downs Casino Resort, del Lago Resort and Casino, Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady, and Resorts World Catskills were able to generate $2.2 million in sports betting revenue in October as opposed to the $1.3 million in November.

The steep decline in sports betting revenue comes as a surprise to many seeing as how football season is typically the peak season for sportsbooks across the US. Tribal casinos in New York do not have to share their sports betting revenue figures to the public, but even if they did, it would be hard to compete with surrounding states.

To put it into perspective, New Jersey sportsbooks combined to accept more than $562 million in total bets for the month of November. That number is an all-time high for the Garden State.

However, a distinct difference between the two states is the fact that New Jersey has a robust online sports betting market. The state of New Jersey produced $33 million in online sports betting revenue alone.

New York is still lagging in terms of introducing mobile sports betting. A bill was introduced in New York’s 2019 legislative session, however, it died in an Assembly committee on the final days of the session.

The issue is expected to resurface during the 2020 legislative session as indicated by the 2019 bill sponsor, Joseph Addabbo Jr.

Until then New Jersey and other surrounding states will continue to climb the charts in terms of revenue reporting.
