Oneida Casino is now the official partner of the Greenbay Packers!

  • The Green Bay Packers have become the fourth NFL franchise to gain sponsorship by a casino.
  • NFL teams becoming officially sponsored by businesses affiliated with gambling is fairly new, beginning last year.
  • Wisconsin has not yet legalized sports betting for its residents.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Oneida Casino has become the first casino in the franchise history of the Green Bay Packers to sponsor the team. The Oneida Nation has had a relationship with the Packers for over 17 years, with the name “Oneida Nation Gate” emblazoned over Lambeau Field’s east gate entrance.

The Oneida Tribe has a few casino locations near the stadium, but were unable to sponsor the team fully due to NFL policies on gambling affiliated sponsorships. While there was already a connection to the Oneida Nation, the official casino sponsorship came about when the NFL changed their policies on casinos.

This policy change only came after the federal ban known as PASPA was repealed in 2018. When sports wagering slowly began its legalization among states nationwide, the NFL began to embrace the idea of profit potential from such partnerships. However, Wisconsin has not legalized sports betting within the state. Many teams have partnered with sportsbooks since the realization of a new revenue stream and broader market range for their general sales. The Dallas Cowboys were the very first to gain a casino sponsorship immediately after the federal ban was lifted. The Cowboys are partnered with Oklahoma’s WinStar World Casino Resort.

The Baltimore Ravens inked a contract with the local Horseshoe Casino, while the Oakland Raiders will have a 15-year sponsorship with Caesars Entertainment once they move to Las Vegas beginning in 2020.

With both the sportsbooks and NFL to profit from partnering with one another, more franchises are becoming interested in the prospect. With large fan bases for both collegiate and professional sports, Wisconsin will likely consider regulating sports betting in the future. College football has already kicked off, with the Wisconsin Badgers (favored by 35-points) taking on Central Michigan on Saturday, September 7. The Packers are 3-point underdogs against the Chicago Bears on Thursday as we head into the start of the NFL season.
