The New York Giants

  • The New York Giants finished as the best NFL team against the spread, covering in 14 of 19 games.
  • The Detroit Lions were similar to the Giants with an average record straight up but a stellar record against the spread at 12-5.
  • Powerhouses such as the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers round out the top four in cover percentage.

NEW YORK – With NFL betting returning in less than two months, it’s best to know which teams were the most successful against the spread in the 2022-2023 NFL season. That title goes to the New York Giants, who covered the spread at a 73.7% rate despite a 9-7 record straight up.

New York Giants (14-5 ATS, 9-7 SU)

After an abysmal 6-11 record against the spread in 2021-2022, the New York Giants posted the best record against the spread in the NFL last season. New York covered the spread in six of their last seven regular-season games, which included covers as underdogs to the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Minnesota Vikings.

The New York Giants kick off the NFL season as 3.5-point underdogs on legal NFL betting sites to the Dallas Cowboys.

Detroit Lions (12-5 ATS, 9-8 SU)

The Detroit Lions started the 2022-2023 NFL season with a 3-4 record against the spread. They went on to cover nine of their last 10 legal sports betting spreads to finish only behind the Giants in cover percentage.

Key spread wins for the Lions came as an underdog to the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, and Buffalo Bills. Detroit covered the spread by an average of 3.9 points per game, giving value to their -105 odds at Bovada Sportsbook to cover a 6.5-point spread against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1.

Cincinnati Bengals (13-6 ATS, 14-5 SU)

A 68.4% cover rate made the Cincinnati Bengals the third-best team in the NFL against the spread last season. The Cincinnati Bengals were favored in all but three games last season, posting a 2-1 record against the spread in those games.

The only game they failed to cover as an underdog was the AFC Championship Game  against the Kansas City Chiefs. Cincinnati is a 2.5-point favorite against the Cleveland Browns in Week 1.

The Bengals covered a 4.5-point spread against the Browns in their final meeting of the season, winning 23-10.

San Francisco 49ers (13-7 ATS, 15-5 SU)

The San Francisco 49ers were a wagon at legal online sportsbooks at the end of the 2022-2023 NFL season, covering the spread in 10 of their last 13 games.

The Niners posted a dominant average margin of victory of 8.7 points per game. San Francisco covered the spread by an average of 3.5 points per game, the third highest in the NFL last season.

Legal sportsbooks are likely to remember these teams’ success against the spread last season, but knowledge of their dominance is key for when betting on the NFL returns on September 7.
