The IBIA published an official response to the Australian Sports Wagering Scheme (ASWS) advocating for live in-game online sports betting. Live betting is only permitted at brick-and-mortar sports betting operations currently in Australia.
The IBIA’s argument in favor of live in-game online sports betting is based on the offshore gambling market and is pushing for a way to combat it.
Australian Betting Advancements
The ASWS is a national system that created to maintain and enforce the integrity of betting on sports in Australia.
Lawmakers in Australia must go through the ASWS in order to regulate live in-game online betting and that is the reason for the proposition sent in by the IBIA.
In the response, the IBIA breaks down the amount of money that regulated online sportsbooks make compared to unregulated international sites.
Through graphs the IBIA displays that a steady increase of onshore sports betting revenue has been claimed over the years since legalization, showing that regulated betting has finally eclipsed international betting sites.
The IBIA believes that the regulated market would completely take over from the offshore sites if they would also allow for live-in game betting online. Currently, the only way to partake in online live betting is through the international betting sites, which the IBIA believes is taking a chunk of the potential betting market.
The ASWS has yet to make any declarations following the IBIA’s response, but with the data shown in the response, it is likely for the ASWS to make some changes.
Legal sports betting in Australia has been constantly evolving since 2012 when lawmakers signed it into legislation.
