Houston Gamblers

  • The USFL season began last weekend with many takeaways able to influence the picks for this week.
  • Teams like the Philadelphia Stars and New Orleans breakers showed much of what they did last season, leading to them both being favored by three or more points.
  • Money lines on the weekend do not hold a ton of value with each favorite being -165 or shorter.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The USFL season is underway for its second year that begun last weekend. While many of the teams feature new players, some units are looking to repeat the success they enjoyed last season.

Taking a look at how each team performed to open the year can give us clues as to the best game props in play for today. While there should be value in the spreads and totals for some matchups, legal betting sites have set money lines to favor the better teams by significant margins.

USFL Week Two Slate Odds

Matchup: Money Line: Spread: Total:
Houston Gamblers @ New Orleans Breakers Gamblers (+180) vs Breakers (-220) Breakers -6.0 39.0
Memphis Showboats @ Birmingham Stallions Showboats (+290) vs Stallions (-390) Stallions -8.0 44.5
New Jersey Generals @ Pittsburgh Maulers Generals (-200) vs Maulers (+170) Generals -5.0 36.5
Michigan Panthers @ Philadelphia Stars Panthers (+140) vs Stars (-165) Stars -3.0 46.5

Why to Fade Most Money lines

As said previously, the money lines here do not seem particularly worth taking, as all the favorites are around -200 or shorter to win. The only one that isn’t features the Panthers taking on the Stars. While the Stars are likely the best or second-best team in the league, the Panthers are not far behind after their impressive week one outing.

For bettors dead-set on betting a money line, the best available is probably for the Stars. In both matchups last year, the Stars triumphed over the Panthers. But as previously said, the Panthers took some strides especially from their QB Josh Love, who was crowned USFL Offensive Player of the Week after week one.

Top Total Plays

When looking at the totals, two in particular stand out being the Panthers vs Stars and Breakers vs Gamblers, for different reasons entirely. Beginning with the Panthers vs Stars, while the total is the highest of the week by a slight margin, it is for good reason.

In two games between the Panthers and Stars last year, the total soared over, finishing with 51 in the first game and a staggering 70 in the second. This in combination with both teams being among the highest scorers of week one all bodes very well for the -110 odds to have the total be 47 or higher.

As for the Breakers vs Gamblers, while their total is set much lower at just 39.5, each team makes a strong case to take the under. Last year, the Breakers were the best scoring defense and look to continue doing the same, as they allowed just 3 offensive points to the Maulers.

The Gamblers also did not inspire much confidence, scoring just 13 points against the Panthers while managing a paltry 194 total yards. That makes the under for the total of 39.5 solid given its -110 odds on legal sportsbooks.

A Word on the Remaining Games and Spreads

While normally some spreads could be worth taking, the season is still in its beginning stages and most teams have yet to show what they are made of. The Stallions seem like a possible play as eight point favorite but they have never played the Showboats, who performed admirably in game one despite the loss.

While the Stallions did win the league last year, this makes the bet possibly worth taking, just know it doesn’t have as much statistical support at this stage.

Similarly, the Generals are favored by five points but mostly because of their incredible nine win streak last year, but this team does not have the consistency yet to make them top contenders. Their QB room is still shaky, but do show some promise from Darius Victor, who was the USFL Offensive Player of the Year last season.

If the Generals show the fight and grit they exuded last season, there is some merit to taking them as five point favorites, but too much is up in the air as the USFL betting season gets underway, making the spread a risky proposition.
