Casey Urlacher and Billy Walters

  • President Trump gave three sports betting convicts leniency with their sentences on his last night as the President of the United States.
  • Among those helped by Trump was famed sports bettor Billy Walters who made a career gambling on sporting events that would win him millions.
  • Casey Urlacher, brother of Brian Urlacher, was also pardoned for his part in running an offshore sports betting ring.

WASHINGTON – During his final night as President of the United States, Donald Trump issued pardons to 73 convicts, three of whom are famous for their gambling convictions.

Hillel “Helly” Nahmad and Casey Urlacher both received pardons from President Trump which means that their criminal records will not hold the gambling charges they were convicted for.

The most famous of the three, Billy Walters, received a commutation rather than a pardon. The difference between the two is a commutation does not clear the charges from a criminal record and instead serves to reduce the prison sentence of an individual.

Walters was hoping for a complete pardon by Trump after making such a request using a lawyer that was once in Trump’s personal legal team arsenal, John Dowd, but he will have to settle for a commutation.

The Case Of Helly Nahmad

Hillel “Helly” Nahmad, was a New York Art Dealer before being investigated and later sentenced to one year and one day in prison in 2014 for running a gambling ring that involved professional athletes.

Since serving his time, it’s been said that he has lived an exemplary lifestyle devoted to serving his community. Prior to his conviction, he was living in New York at the Trump Tower.

“President Trump granted a full pardon to Hillel Nahmad. This pardon is supported by members of his community. Mr. Nahmad was convicted of a sports gambling offense,” read a statement issued by the White House.

Casey Urlacher Gets Presidential Help

Casey Urlacher, brother of NFL Hall of Fame LB Brian Urlacher, was facing charges of being a part of an illegal sports betting ring. The ring was said to have made millions of dollars.

Due to his brother Brian endorsing President Trump on several occasions via social media outlets, it was assumed that Trump would help out Casey who was facing a ten-year prison sentence. This case was unique as the sentencing was not yet handed out and pardons typically occur only after a conviction has taken place.

“President Trump granted a full pardon to Casey Urlacher. This pardon is supported by his friends and family, and countless members of his community. Mr. Urlacher has been charged with conspiracy to engage in illegal gambling. Throughout his life, Mr. Urlacher has been committed to public service and has consistently given back to his community,” read the statement from the White House.

The Case For Billy Walters

And finally, famous sports bettor Billy Walters received his presidential commutation. Walters was convicted in 2017 for insider trading where he received a five-year prison sentence.

He served four years of that sentence before being given the opportunity to finish the remainder from his home in Carlsbad, California because of his age, 74, and the CARES Act.

This commutation will see Walters’ house arrest for the remainder of his sentence forfeited. Walters was a notorious sports gambler specifically with NFL betting winning him millions.

“President Trump commuted the sentence of William Walters. This commutation is supported by former Majority Leader Harry Reid, former Governor Jim Gibbons, former Representative Shelley Berkley, former Clark County Sheriff William Young, former Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik, numerous professional golfers including Butch Harmon, David Feherty, Peter Jacobsen, and Phil Mickelson, and former 60 minutes correspondent Lara Logan. Mr. Walters was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for insider trading. Since his conviction, Mr. Walters has served nearly 4 years of his prison sentence and has paid $44 million in fines, forfeitures, and restitution. In addition to his established reputation in the sports and gaming industry, Mr. Walters is well known for his philanthropic efforts and was previously named Las Vegas’ Philanthropist of the Year,” read the statement from the White House.
