  • Washington DC saw $15.28 million wagered on sports in March 2021.
  • This is down slightly from the February numbers.
  • Retail sportsbooks continue to dominate the Washington DC market.

WASHINGTON – Sports betting fans in Washington DC were less active in March, with overall betting handle dipping slightly month over month.

What continues to remain true is that retail sportsbooks dominate the market. This could be caused by the current restrictions placed on mobile sportsbooks in DC.

Sports betting in Washington DC has somewhat struggled to gain major footing compared to other markets, but the impact of the William Hill retail sportsbook may show signs of a solution.

DC Betting Dips

March saw the total betting handle in DC reach $15.28 million which is down from the $15.3 million wagered in February. Despite February being a shorter month and March having March Madness betting available, the betting handle took a hit.

The reports from the DC Lottery show a few things. First, online sportsbook GamebetDC saw $3.8 million wagered which is the lowest since launch.

The next thing is that $11,430,856.11 came from retail sportsbooks, once again showing that local DC betting fans prefer the name recognition of the William Hill sportsbook at the Capital One Arena.

While the William Hill sportsbook does offer mobile betting, this is only within a two-block radius of the stadium itself. For district-wide mobile betting, local DC betting fans will have to use GamebetDC which has proven so far to not be the choice they wish to make.

Compared to other legal sports betting markets where mobile betting is the prime way players get in on the action, it seems to be an afterthought in DC. What could solve this issue is if DC legislators allow true mobile betting for other sportsbooks. William Hill for example has clearly proven to be a local favorite for betting fans.

The steady decreases in betting activity at the GamebetDC sportsbook is proof enough that if the market wishes to truly thrive, some adjustments need to be made.
