Comparing Iowa to Indiana in sports betting action and college basketball wins.

  • The DraftKings mobile sportsbook is set to launch in Iowa.
  • Bettors in Iowa have to register for an account at the Wild Rose Casino.
  • Indiana is surging past Iowa in terms of sports betting and in college basketball.

CLINTON, Iowa – It was recently announced that the DraftKings mobile sportsbook is almost ready to launch in Iowa.

Iowa sports betting launched in August 15, 2019 and the state has been seeing plenty of sports betting action since the state launched. Though it is one of the newer industries, DraftKings seems to be overall satisfied with the state of Iowa sports betting.

“The (Iowa) state regulators are fantastic; we had no problem there,” said Matt Kalish, DraftKings co-founder. “Within DraftKings, we had a lot going on. We are in the pending process of going public, and we were in the middle of announcing a merger. Behind the scenes, we had a couple of things that were taking up our time, but we are really excited to be out (in Iowa) now.”

Once the DraftKings sportsbook goes mobile, bettors are free to bet on sports no matter where they are in the state.

However, there is a restriction that may limit the number of people using the DraftKings Sportsbook. State laws indicate that to sign up for a mobile sportsbook, bettors must first go to the retail sportsbook. That means that all bettors interested in the DraftKings mobile sportsbook must go to the Wild Rose Casino to sign up.

This restriction will remain active until 2021. Due to this, Iowa is lagging behind states like Indiana.

Iowa Vs. Indiana

When comparing revenue, Indiana is much further ahead of Iowa, despite the states launching roughly two weeks apart from each other.

One of the main factors is that Indiana allows for remote mobile sports betting registration. Multiple states have proven that easy access to mobile sports betting is essential to larger profits and taxes.

On top of that, Indiana allows for prop bets on state college games while Iowa does not.

That means for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Indiana Hoosiers game happening at 8:00 p.m. tonight, Indiana will be able to take in a larger number of wagering types on the game.

Indiana is currently sitting at -140 favorites to take down Iowa. Iowa has +120 odds to walk away with the win. When comparing sports betting revenue and college athletics, Indiana seems to be the one walking away with the wins. But opening the DraftKings mobile sportsbook could help close the gap for Iowa.

If all goes as planned, the DraftKings mobile sportsbook is likely to open before the start of March Madness.
